I went after John Gall for a couple years. I think it all stemmed from him being a St. Louis first baseman (McGwire) and his name being so close to John Galt (Atlas Shrugged). I knew he was older and mediocre, but I bought and bought anyway.

If you have a loop, the angle of the dots is a pretty reliable test. It’s hard to see most of the signs of a fake unless you have the card in hand. All are pretty subtle v
It’s amazing how many ‘85 and ‘87 McGwires are showing up on eBay. Just a word of caution, I would guess at least 20% of the regular ‘85 Topps are counterfeit. I purchase a few lots a couple years ago, and I think about 30% of those were fake. Different sellers too.
