Mike was a great help to us when I worked at Beckett and was the book price guide editor because of his knowledge and interest in "odd-ball" cards and was always willing to assist.
Please let me know if you get any further details about Mike
Thanks!
Rich

He signed at my show a few years ago and brought copies of his book to sign. He carries in the box of books (decent sized walk) and asks where his table is. I show up and he brings the books to his table. The amazing thing to realize he is only 95 or so at the time. Amazing how sharp he still...
in the early 1990's SCD could be 400 pages or MORE a week. Obviously, as print has scaled back the magazine pages are nowhere near where they used to be. I'm personally fine just reading the articles on line but there are still a decent number of subscribers left and for things like a show...
I get some people's reluctance totally but as I've noted on other boards there are some logical reasons to have admission charges.
1) Yes it helps defray even to a minor extent the cost of the room. I did do door prizes at most of my shows (usually some shopping sprees) but that was OK because...
A couple of things
1) The NSCC, and I've had numerous talks with the people running the show, have a limited number of places they can use for the show. I believe the count is between 10-12 and some of them frankly don't want us so there is that issue
2) As a person living in the DFW area...
IIRC, the 7.1 date (or around then) was announced as the goal to start accepting subs again after the 3 month pause in submissions. Darren posting the 7.1 return is nothing more than repeating already known posts.
One small correction, the Beckett article on the Pujols card has to be way before 2010 because my last E&V column was in June 2007. I think the article is late 2002, early 2003. But this makes sense to me. I'll check the COMC Data Base when snowmageddon down here in DFW clears up.
The 1st 20 baseball issues were printed in somewhat limited quantities. You don't see a lot of them in the secondary market. The other sports are a mixed bag -- the 1st Football is always popular; Basketball with Jordan and a few others on the covers, Hockey #1 and a couple of others, etc.
But...
I know in football they existed and Dan Hitt, who was our FB guy could always tell the difference. I would suspect the same thing existed in baseball.
BTW -- I have ZERO problems if someone acquires a variation on COMC and then lets me know. Knowledge is king and I'm also in favor of someone...
BTW -- for those who may not know or remember me, I was the E&V guy at Beckett back in the day. After a few years out of the hobby, I've been at COMC for nearly 4 years now and whenever time permits I do work on adding E&V's to our data base. I added the Alomar a couple of minutes ago. But if...
