Excluding team sets and the damn Rawlings glove card, this is the last pre-1980 Doerr card I need.

Have never seen one and hard to find info on this 35-card set. Like most TCMA issues, it's probably a underappreciated. Google search for it turns up the checklist, but nothing concrete in terms of info.

Did some hard digging this am into the corners of eBay and ending up finding a seller who has a Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio for sale. Decent pictures in the auction give us some details on the set

As you can see in the second picture it looks like there is a return address label on the back of some of the cards that reads:

HOUSE OF JAZZ, LTD.
"Sounds of the 30s, 40s, 50s"
Glenside, Pa. 19038

Don't know about you, but Glenside, Pennsylvania is not the place I would have guessed that this set came from (New Orleans anyone?). Never know I guess. Googled it and doesn't look like it is still in existence either.

Also seems odd to me that only two out of the four cards listed in the auction have the House of Jazz sticker on the back. Did they not all include the sticker? Could make for authentication issues...

So we know that the set exists, but does anyone have their player? Anybody have more info on the distribution of this set?

Thanks,
Jeff

SCD has the set as 1971. The sticker on back matches the photo of the card shown in SCD (Richie Ashburn).

There's a Gehrig shown on PSA site: http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistry/showcase.aspx?sc=2700
PSA has graded two Doerr's, both Gem Mint 10's.

Controversy has dogged this card set since the first reports
of its existence in the early 1970s. The legitimacy of
the issue has been questioned though certain hobby journalists
traced the cards to a record store which supposedly
gave them away with music purchases, along with similar
cards depicting musicians. The 2-3/8" x 3-1/2" cards are
printed in black-and-white with round corners. Backs of
some, but not all, cards have a blue-and-white address sticker
for “HOUSE OF JAZZ, LTD.” The unnumbered cards are
checklisted here in alphabetical order.

Interesting. Sounds like there's a lot of mixed info out there, and maybe that's why SCD has 1971 but Beckett has 1975. Seems almost like a unlicensed issue rather than a TCMA issue however, especially since TCMA always tried to add their copyright info.

Considering how rare they appear to be, those prices are laughable.

I feel like to truly cross it off my list, I would need to acquire one with the address label on the back.

Thanks,
Jeff

PSA and SCD do not attribute them to TCMA. First TCMA sets appeared in 1972.

I'm amused. I lived in Glenside from about 1981 to 1985. I don't remember a House of Jazz, and I assume it was a record store, but there were no record stores in the town of my childhood. Had to go to a mall. Anyway, that's kind of interesting to me, even aside from the sportsball players. Philadelphia has always had a vibrant music scene, and jazz was huge before rock, so I'm not surprised there was something with that name in a sleepy suburb.

Not quite sure if this picture is supposed to only be the top 2 as HOJ, but if all 4 are linked that would def show a non-round corner version?

I wonder why PSA chose to go with 1971 matching SCD vs Becketts 1975. (Yeah I guess that rhetorical) if they are for sure 1971, wonder why Beckett hasn't changed their dates. (Another rhetorical probably)

A little late to the party here but I can confirm those are not TCMA issued cards.

Trying to help out those with questions about the House of Jazz issue. as far as the sticker is concerned, some cards had stickers on the back and some did not. The tickers were pasted on the back and usually fell off the back of the cards. Cards were given away to people who purchased something at the store. If the stickers were unavailable, the customer just got the card, which is a photograph type issue. The cards were supposedly issued in 1970 and 1971 and had nothing to do with TCMA. I have amazed quite a few over the years and some have the stickers affixed and others do not. Pictures can be seen on the first page of www.hofmemories.com
