Being a set collector or even a popular PC guy can really stink sometimes. For the most part it can be rewarding but there are those times when you get stuck competing against someone else who has much much deeper pockets than you (at least it feels that way) and you end up overspending so much money it becomes exhausting. I remember when I was going after my 1998 Precious metals set I had to fight for the cards against someone who I knew would blow me out of the water on each auction. I would always snipe at the end and win very rarely but only if I spent 2X-3X what the card was actually worth. Sometimes as much as 10x what they would sell for if either one of us were not in the game. When going after HTF cards though, at least on the surface, it seems worth it.
I find it really funny because it feels like the other collector is my nemesis and the when I do win the W is sooooo rewarding
Does anyone else here have their “Nemesis”??
DO you get that feeling of satisfaction when winning the item over that person?
I know this may sound really shallow (which it probably is) but such is the ways of being a rare set collector I guess. Sorry for the long window post just had to get this off my chest. Now back to the “war” LOL.
I would like to add that I always try to reach out to the people I am competing against and try to reach some sort of agreement so that we don’t exponentially blow the values up. On my Precious Metals set it worked out well as the other collector and I were able to assist each other on some very tough cards to find and not break the bank. We also now have a good enough relationship where I feel OK to reach out to him if I am looking for something rare and I think he may know where it is; however, it does not always work out that way.
