Don Mattingly played in a couple of games in 1982 and 91 games in 1983.

Topps could have put him in the 82 Traded or 83 base set, but more realistically he should have been in the 83 traded set.

Had he been in either traded, his ONLY RC would be a whole lot rarer but more importantly, 84 Donruss would never have gained hobby stardom and become classic set it is today.

Also, Alex Rodriguez should have been in the 1993 topps traded usa set and Stadium Club Murphy but topps decided otherwise.

Had that card been issued, those would have been his only RCs making all his 94 cards, including SP not Rookies.

And since this never happened, Alex's SP blew up which made collectors Chase Jeter's SP when got hot.

So, if the stadium Murphy RC was made, the SP would be a couple bucks and would have a huge negative effect on Jeter's sp because everyone would want his Murphy instead.

If Clark would have made the 85 Topps USA set, that would have changed the momentum his 87 cards had. I think elgibilty played a part, but still there was a chance he would have been in that.

I've thought about this a little. Growing up, I would have loved to see a "perfect" RC set. You had 1992 Bowman, 1990 Leaf, etc... but each one was missing a few guys.
It would've been cool to see:

1989 Upper Deck Sammy Sosa, Curt Schilling, Albert Belle
1990 Leaf Bernie Williams, Juan Gonzalez
1991 - There weren't any super premium sets... Stadium Club? 91 Bowman Pedro Maybe?
1992 Bowman Nomar
1993 Finest Derek Jeter (could you imagine the refractor? Unfortunately, only JT Snow got a RC in 93 Finest) - would have been huge
1994 Bowman's Best/Finest Alex Rodriguez

2001 Topps Heritage Albert Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki.

From Baseballcardpedia:

Description
2001 Topps Heritage is a 407-card set released right before spring training in February 2001. It is considered one of the landmark products of the 2000s for its model configuration, "throwback" design, and legendary autograph lineup. In 2009, 2001 Topps Heritage was awarded "Product of the Decade" by Beckett Baseball.
Legacy of 2001 Topps Heritage
The lasting legacy of 2001 Topps Heritage cannot be stressed enough. With Heritage, Topps found the right combination in making a product that, while challenging to collect, was still realistic for the average collector to put a full set together. It should also be noted that Topps Heritage did not feature a rookie card of either Ichiro Suzuki or Albert Pujols. The only notable rookie cards in the set are of Kyle Lohse and Juan Uribe.

Heres another.

What if the 1952 Topps Mantle was #211 instead of #311 ?
That would mean it wasnt a part of the rare and famous high number series which is filled with hobby lore.

Would it still be as pricey as it is now?
Dont forget, his high number card was double printed so its not as "rare" as other high number cards.

All three marquee RCs (Sandberg, Gwynn and Boggs) from 1983 could have easily been added to 1982 Topps Traded. Remove those three as RCs from 1983 sets, and the key rookie becomes Willie McGee.
