Great thread!!! Also, Great Ripken cards too!!!

I think as more and more collectors from this era jump back into the hobby these cards will become increasingly harder to afford. The gems of the 80's and, in general from the junk wax era, will standout from the massive overproduction of that period. Also, there was a lot less product choices out there as compared to modern cards being produced in the 2000's (i.e. Ichiro has like 50 different RC cards from 2001).

No, those are 1990. DBacon got it right, Blue Chips. They were designed like the Grand Slammers. There are Donruss and Leaf versions as well as color variations I believe.

I'll share some not so widely known and/or collected items from the 80s. Specialty collectors probably have their own list of tough regional, oddball issues that never or rarely seem to come up for sale. I'll start it off with one that may be THE hardest item to find...1981 Gafline Garvey. I just listed one for sale at an extremely high price just to test the waters. Lots of watchers, but nobody bit. It is now back in the collection. Although technically not a card, it is cataloged as such. Same goes of the 1982 Montreal News "cards", 1986 Wallich Enterprises postcard and the 1980-81 Long Beach Press Telegram Dodgers/Angels newspaper cards.Click image for larger version.

Also tough are 1986 Inside Baseball/Allred & 1981-82 FBI discs.

I would imagine the 82 Fleer Ripken/ Ford sample would be huge.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to in post #9. In 2013 there were a.few that went for like $300ish and a full sheet that want extremely cheap. It's I wish I would have bought for sure, but like on many items, I never pulled the trigger.

Venezuelan Stickers from the early 80's are also pretty rare, and usually in terrible condition.

I still haven't seen an 88 Tara plaque. Has Ron darling on the Mets checklist on the back.

Can you guys check yours when you get a chance?

I've checked hundreds of images over the years. I'm not will to say it exists 100%. Besides Darling it supposedly has some spelling variations like on Santiago Benny/Benito etc. Who knows but I'd love to see one.

I would like to know where the rumor of this variation originated. No one ever claims to have seen one, yet tons of us have scoured the Earth to find them.

No idea either, but after 20 years of looking etc, and no one has seen it, the only thing I could think of is a test issue. Meaning they were going to relaunch, a package(s) was made and never distributed. Or someone though it about what idea could I spread that means really nothing bit causes people to spend time on it.

It is print "flaw" where the card received low level of cyan in the printing process. They are not very hard to find, there is one on COMC right now. All of the junk era stuff can be found with variations like these.

That said, I think they are cool and would grab one on the cheap.

1988 SDSU Alumni fundraiser set. Sets were distributed at a hotel fundraiser event for a donation, one day only. Tony Gwynn and Mark Grace are the big names. I've seen about 5 sets in the last 20 years, bought 4 of them, and gotten $100-$150 for the Grace card alone each time.
