I have an opportunity to purchase this 1952 Topps Mantle and would like any and all comments to figure out legitimacy and grade so I know what I should offer. Card was owned by a local yankee fan who has passed. Family would like to sell. They have a complete Topps run from 52-69. Cards are rough for most part. But need an idea on the 52. Crease in top right corner, some peeling and off center. Will it have a chance at 1.5 or not?

I'm no authority but I've looked at enough to say it looks legit, most fakes I've seen fix most of the printing imperfections that give vintage it's lovable charm. Depending on what the surface it like, with the centering, corners and crease I'd say a 1-1.5 is a reasonable thought. Honestly though, an authentic 52 Topps Mickey?? Who cares what it grades at, it looks great.

The Mantle was bought 40 years ago by this gentleman. All cards are somewhat rough. I will put an offer on the whole run. Here are the rest.

You don't see a complete run of Mick's very often...regardless of condition.

I know nothing about spotting fakes, just that you really need to do your homework on it. There's a lot of info on the web about spotting fakes. One thing that stands out to me is that if it was purchased 40 years ago and in the same collection since....would there be many fakes out at that time? Was there a time when fake '52 mantles really started popping up?

Is that really white paper on the right side of the card where it seems to have surface chipping ?

Reprints have been around since the 70's, which does date correctly. I am not an expert on 52 Mantle's but as others have said there are a lot of resources available. Try Net54, too.

My bet is that is grades a PSA 2
