Gotta love letgo.

I saw an ad for a Mike Stanton autographed baseball on letgo.
Seller was asking $35. There was only one fuzzy photo. I
couldn't tell if it was an OMLB ball or not. I asked him for other
photos. He sent some back. One had an MLB Authentic hologram.
I looked it up, and sure enough, it was a certified Mike (Giancarlo)
Stanton from a rookie year signing.

I told him I'd take it, but could't meet up until the weekend, unless
he could meet me half way. (He's 15 miles away, but on an LA
weekday, he might as well be on the moon.) He told me he didn't
have a car, but if I could come today [yesterday] he would take $25.

I decided to go at lunch. I don't have a Stanton yet, and figured his
autographs would be much higher soon.

I'm halfway to him and my phone starts blowing up with texts. My
phone had dropped between the seats on the floor, so I couldn't check
them until I arrived at the meeting place.

I read them (all from the seller):

12:55 hey dude u still com in
12:57 if not just tell me
12:59 I can do $20 hmu
1:01 im here dont see u
1:02 i can really use the cash
1:02 pls dude
1:03 ok $10

1:05 I respond: Sounds good to me. I'm in the parking lot.

At this point, I know something is sketchy. I notice his tweakerface.
(For those unfamiliar with the condition, Tweakerface is an ailment
that your facial structure possesses if you have smoked crystal meth
for any period of time. Even if you never recognized it before, you've
seen it. Some of you here might have it. If you've ever smoked ****,
go look in the mirror. That's Tweakerface.)

He shows me the ball. It's legit. Without me asking any details, he
tells me this elaborate story about how his friend gave it to him for
Christmas but he is a Dodgers fan so he doesn't want it anymore.

Up to this point, I felt a little guilty because I assumed he had no idea
what he had. So I asked him, do you know anything about this ball?

"Yeah, this guy is about to break the home run record. I looked online
and his autographs go for a couple hundred bucks. They will probably
go for more when he's the MVP."

Sold. $10.

I'm not naive enough to think his birthday story was true. He stole this ball.

But he was going to sell it to someone, no matter what. How would I go about
returning it to [or even finding] the rightful owner? What can I do?

I suppose you could hit up the local precinct in his area and just let them know he seemed sketchy and if they get any reports of stolen memorabilia to contact you. With only suspicion I don't see any reason you'd have to turn it in or for them to confiscate it lol

LAPD has no time to put in any effort on anything this minor.

Best I can do is keep it, and if I come across anything down
the road, return it to the owner. Until then, SCORE! :D

I applaud you feeling guilty but just know if you didn't get it someone else would and hope the owner has insurance. Hard to really do anything about it. About 99% chance the cops wouldn't put more effort than maybe taking the ball on suspicion of a crime?

Bring me your Bickford, Ryan McMahon, Senzatela and Peter Lambert cards

Take the W and move on. Like Brewer said, it's only suspicion so I wouldn't waste much time on it.

I came to the same conclusion as everyone else. I just didn't want it to seem
I hadn't thought about the possibility of a poor kid who got his ball stolen.

I couldn't quiet tell what was going on his messages...but did you get the ball for only $10??

If so, he must have been withdrawing like mad and really needed a hit.

I recognize those signs too because in my past life I was a junkie too. I was a poly-substance abuser (which means I abused & was addicted to more than one substance) so crystal was among one of my guilty pleasures. I had only used the stuff for roughly 6 months but it was enough to screw my life up even worse than it had already been. I say "was" addicted to drugs in my past life but those knowledgeable of addiction know that it's a chronic life long disease, it doesn't just go away once you quit, so what I really mean by that is that it's been a looong time since I last used (8 years or so).

You feel bad cuz you only paid $10. Should have given him what you would have paid, or at least $25. You'd have felt better, I bet. Although to think it would have gone to meth, well that may make you feeling better at the $10. I wouldn't worry about it. **** happens.

Yeah, I would have given him the original agreed upon $25 just because it's how I do things. Doesn't mean there was anything wrong with paying $10. After all, he proposed it.

The money surely went to meth but regardless, it's his money. He can do whatever he wants to do with it, it's none of my business.

Personally, I would have never done a face-to-face meet-up transaction with a stranger from a site like this to begin with so it's a moot point for me. I watch too much investigation discovery & crime drama tv so I'm too paranoid over "what could" happen.
