    TV Sports Mailbag Sets

    A while ago I stumbled on an issue from 1990 that I never knew about - the TV Sports Mailbag jumbo 8x10 card. Beckett lists the 1989 and 1992 sets but nothing about 1990 and 1991. From what I can tell TV Sports Mailbag put out jumbo sets in 4 years:

    1989 = active players, 140 cards
    1990 = active players, ? cards
    1991 = HOF inductees, ? cards
    1992 = 500 HR club, 15 cards

    1989 and 1990 are very similar on front and back. 1989 is on left, 1990 is on right:

    Probably hurt severely by the size. People in masses just do not seem to like to stray from 2.5" x 3.5" much. I have a few, but nobody in the set that I really collect to the extend I had to have one. I would add the Dodgers if convenient and if there is a Thomas, Belle or Maddux, wouldn't mind those either.

    Yeah they are pretty big. I had never seen one when I was collecting in the 80's - 90's so had no idea they were jumbos. The 1989 was just another unobtainable card on my checklist, so I was surprised at the size when I found it on ebay a couple years ago.

    I found the 1990 totally by chance last month in team-card pack of Padres. Didn't realize it was another TV Sports Mailbag issue until it arrived in the mail. It is damn rare to come across an issue from 27 years ago that I never new existed, so thought other PC'ers would like to know that the 1990 set is out there.

    I'm pretty sure they did them in 1993, as well, but at that point they were just 8x10 photos that had TV Sports Mailbag stamped on the back. Photo stock rather than card stock.

    I have a stack of the 1989s. Anybody looking for particular players let me know. They aren't in perfect condition but I will mail them for the price of shipping.

    I never knew they were catalogued as actual card sets. I have a few that I bought as 8 x 10 photographs at card shows and shops way back in the day to get signed by players.

    I just thought they were licensed photos and never thought of them as being part of a set even though they're numbered.
    Weird how you learn something new about the hobby almost 30 years later.

    Beckett lists a lot of older photos (mostly team and sponsor issues) in their checklists. I notice it in the older football that I collect.
