This kid really can't really put up decent strikeout numbers but he sure can go deep into games, prevent runs from scoring & avoids implosions.

Through his first 9 games of the season he has never given up more than 3 earned runs in a start & he's gone 7 IP or deeper in 4 of his last 5 starts with six straight starts of at least 6 IP. You look at his W/L record, ERA & WHIP and think, wow that guys a future ace! Then you see his strikeout rate & strikeout per walk ratio and think well, maybe more like an innings eater middle of the rotation guy.

In the majors, no runs.

But when you reach the majors the competition becomes much tougher and if you don't have the ability to strike out batters when needed, those 7 IP, 2 ER games will become 4.1 IP, 4 ER games.

Just having great strikeout stuff doesn't make you an ace (poor command and you're just a bottom of the rotation starter or bullpen arm) but almost all the true aces of the game have a 8 K/9+ rate or higher (with 3 or more k's per walk). There are exceptions but generally those guys have elite BB/9 & HR/9 rates due to being groundball pitchers (Maddux, Glavine). After all, strikeouts, walks, home runs & hit batters are the only outcomes a pitcher can truly control on their own (without defense being involved).
