Haven't seen it to get the quote, but a psychologist should never - ever - attempt to diminish the personal identity of another person. What a *******.
,
At 11:09, the therapist gets frustrated and says, "60,000 cards of a guy who doesn't play baseball anymore, of a guy who isn't going to be in the Hall of Fame, of a guy who if you went out on the street and asked people, "Do you know Andy Van Slyke?" nobody would know who he is."
So according to the therapist (who said he was purposely trying to rile up the collector), if the guy collected a Hall of Famer, it would be alright.

Everyone can say what they want, but there's plenty of super collectors out there that are just like him.
Everyone collects, because - at its root - it's an obsession. Hell, my brother buys packs to keep him from gambling in a casino, and it helps!
I collect what I do (DKs) because it reminds me of something I enjoyed when I was young. Granted - it doesn't cripple me socially like that guy.

Did the Van Slyke collector live in his own house or did he live with his mother? They focused on the Van Slyke room so much that I couldn't tell what else was in the house/apt.

He said over on BO that the show used creative editing to make it more "extreme" and that most of his stuff actually stays put away. He was asked to put it all over the walls for the show. He also says a past relationship left him with the only option of living with his mom. I have to believe the guy, as I have seen many of these types of shows do the same type of thing. Cajun Pawn Stars is filmed where I am from, and everything on that show is rigged.

I think there is nothing wrong with what this guy does with his money. Like someone said earlier about his brother, it's an escape goat to avoid getting in trouble. I blow about $300-$400 a month on cards and the wife supports me, as long as my responsibilities are priorities are in line and my hobby is not detrimental to the support I'm obligated to provide for my family, she doesn't care. Nothing wrong with having that inner child come out from time to time. Your thoughts?

Anyone who is approaching 40 that has no other desire in life then to live in their parents house, work as a common employee at toys r us, and spoon over their massive collection of VanSlyke cards indeed needs help. It was very sad and I sincerely hope no one here is that misguided in life.
