Let's get started with learning how to decode and score your starting pitchers.
As a reminder, each contestant must score their own franchise. Once you get the hang of deciphering your codes, this is a very easy (and hopefully fun) game to play. However, no one will do it for you. Participation is required if you want a chance to win!
Deciphering Your Codes
1st Code
The 1st code you entered refers to a corresponding cell in a 10x10 grid.
In that grid are 100 numbers, each referring to one of the top 100 winningest pitchers in major league history.
Simply cross reference the first code you provided to find your player.
Example:
You chose F8 as your 1st code for starting pitcher #1 . If you look at the starting pitcher grid, F8 refers to 71.
71 means you are looking for the pitcher with the 71st highest career win total.
This pitcher is Joe Niekro.
NOTE: If your number is not shown, that means your player is tied with others. Simply count down to the spot where your player's rank should be.
Example: If you drew 69, you won't find that number in the all-time win list on MLB.com. That's because there's a 3 way tie for 67th place. Simply go back to 67 (Hooks Dauss) and go down two players to get to 69 (Mel Harder). Make sense? This method will be used anytime you have a player tied with others.
2nd Code
The 2nd code refers to a corresponding cell in a 26x15 grid.
In that grid are 390 codes, each referring to 1 of 15 different pitching categories and 1 of 26 seasons during that player's career you will use to score that player.
Simply cross reference the 2nd code you provided to get your stat/season code.
Your stat/season code is broken down as follows:
- The letter refers to the statistical category you will use to score that player's line. See the scoring chart.
- The number refers to the player's season you will use to score that player's line.
Example:
You have Joe Niekro.
You chose R12 as your 2nd code for him. If you look at the stat/season grid, R12 refers to M4.
M4 means you are looking for statistical category "M" during Niekro's 4th season.
NOTE: If your season number is greater than the length of that player's career, simply continue counting from Year 1 until you get to your number. In Niekro's case, suppose you had a season number of 24. In this case, you would count through his 22 year career once and then continue back at the top to his 2nd year to get to 24.
Scoring
Once you decode your player, stat category, and season, you're ready to score their line.
Simply look at the scoring chart and multiply their actual total for that stat category for the season in question by the value assigned, depending on whether or not they are a Hall of Famer.
If you need to confirm if a player is a Hall of Famer, go here:
Hall of Famers | Baseball Hall of Fame
Let's take the Niekro example from the top.
You selected F8, R12
F8 = 71 = Joe Niekro
R12 = M4 = Earned Runs Allowed in Year 4
He had 96 earned runs allowed in Year 4 (1970).
Niekro is not a Hall of Famer.
The scoring chart shows -5 for each earned run allowed by a non-Hall of Famer.
96 x -5 = -480
If Niekro was a Hall of Famer, his score would've been 96 x -2.5 = -240.
Add up all 5 starting pitcher scores and post it in this thread.
Trade Deadline
After your outfielders have been decoded and scored, you will be involved in a trade with one of your fellow franchise owners. Up to 3 positions will be swapped straight up with that owner. Details to follow shortly.
Bonus Scoring
This will apply to your entire franchise and will be introduced at the very end of the contest.
I will keep this thread open until Wednesday before moving on to the next part of your franchise.
A similar thread will be introduced for the remaining sections.
Contestants are encouraged to spot check each other's posted total.
If you have any questions, be sure to ask! Once you score a couple of lines, you'll see how easy this is to play.
Good luck!

You have Joe Niekro.
You chose R12 as your 2nd code for him. If you look at the stat/season grid, R12 refers to M4.
M4 means you are looking for statistical category "M" during Niekro's 4th season.
