I had a card that when I went to list it, I thought I would use the proceeds and give 100% to the Breast Cancer Awareness..

I'm glad I got more than I normally would for a Pete Rose Auto..

That's great. Please don't give to the Komen Foundation, they're terrible. But there are any number of other charities that do great work.

I'll ask why so? My wife works for Komen foundation and they do a lot of great work for people. Yes, a lot of the donations go to administrative costs same as any charity. There are a lot of internet rumors that Komen provides abortions and that is simply not the case.

Komen has a great machine, and is probably responsible for all the pink you see, but they've been less directly impactful on the fight against cancer than they could be. However, it looks like they have improved things in the last couple years.

They came under a lot of fire a few years ago for spending a lot more on executive salaries, fundraising, and "raising awareness" than most other charities. The proportions were askew compared to others supporting research, caring for cancer patients and survivors, and doing things that are directly beneficial. If you google it I'm sure you can find a lot of dirt, but mostly from a couple years ago.

Breast cancer is a terrible disease, there are lots of other cancers out there that are underpublicized and research and treatment woefully underfunded. My mom had breast cancer, but has been in remission for 15 years. That's incredible, and I'm so thankful. Yet, while it's hard to say there is "enough" being done for any one cause, have you ever heard of glioblastoma? It's an incredibly lethal brain cancer, average prognosis about 18 months after diagnosis, if you're "lucky" enough to discover it early. Both my dad and my girlfriend's dad died of it in the last 2 years, and my dad's was only discovered early through a hunch of his opthamologist. Just looking at the list of charities on these pages it's amazing how little the average person knows about the diseases behind them, despite the mortality rates.

Please give what you can wherever you want. Don't mind me.

My nephews wife works at Tacoma General in the children's oncology dept. She sees babys with cancer which is tough to deal with..

The reason I chose to give the money to the Breast Awareness was because of the auto and the "Save the Boobies" quote..

Since I work at a company where we have a fund that all the employees can donate to, I will give them the $$ and just designate "Breast Cancer" on my donation on behalf of the customer..

My wife actually works for former NFL player and NBC Broadcaster Chris Collinsworth's wife. She is the Cincinnati Komen chapter head honcho. She doesn't accept a salary as she is just head honcho figuratively. His wife is a lawyer by day, fund raiser for the cause at other times. She does have to travel some and there are expenses there. My wife has to accept a salary as she makes actual decisions on things, therefore she is paid and her earnings are taxed. My wife makes about $35,000 a year.

Komen doesn't just do research, they make sure those with cancer get the care they need physically and psychologically. There are pre-cancer screenings that are paid for by Komen to indigent women. They make sure after a cancer surgery that the survivors also have post medical and psychological care regardless of insurance and ability to pay. Komen is guilty of paying a lot for transportation. I keep suggesting they solicit companies to donate the transportation but there are tax issues there. They also provide prosthetics or falsies to those that had removal.

It goes way beyond the research lab.
