[h=1]Sports Card Hot List for July 28th 2013[/h] Posted on July 28, 2013 by Corry Gross

Collectors from all over will convene all in one place next week. Many of you reading this will be in Rosemont, IL next week for the Nationals Sports Collectors Convention. Stop by the FCB booth while you are there.

This week’s list focuses on a lot of recent trades that have happened in baseball and others that made their Major League debut.

Mariano Rivera Early Rookie Cards

After winning MVP in the MLB All-Star game, Mariano Rivera received exposure to even the casual baseball fan, let alone collectors. The greatest closer of all-time saw his card prices jump dramatically after his last All-Star game. Mariano only has a handful of rookie cards out there on the open market. His 1990 Tampa Bay Yankees might be the rarest out of them all. It was selling for around $80 before the All-Star break, but shortly after, one sold for $164 and another for $137. These will probably go for even more after his final game with the Yankees or when he gets the call for the Hall.

2012 Bowman Chrome Junior Lake Rookie Cards

Junior Lake burst into the scene with the Chicago Cubs just last week after being called up. In 8 short games, he is batting .417 with a couple of bombs and five RBIs. He has also played great defense. Lake is making Cubs fans forget about Alfonso Soriano after he was traded to the Yankees this week. Because of his hot start, Lake’s 2012 Bowman Chrome refractors are selling for a hot price. Base refractors are selling for $10, purple refractors /199 are up to $20, and a red refractor /5 sold for $170 at auction. He also has a photo variation SP in 2012 Bowman Chrome that is now up to $40.

2011 Bowman Chrome Chris Archer Autographs

Archer has been on fire as of late. He has won his last five starts, and he threw a shutout on Saturday. He is 6-3 overall this season. The Rays rotation has been strong this month. David Price has also pitched complete games in 3 of his last 4 starts. Archer’s 2011 Bowman Chrome autographs have jumped from $8 to $25 after his shutout.

2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Mike Olt Autographs

Olt was included with CJ Edwards in the Matt Garza trade and was sent to the Cubs. Olt was great last summer hitting .288 with 28 home runs, but this year has been a different story; he is only hitting .217 with 12 home runs this year, and it caused concern for the Rangers, so they dealt him to the Cubs for Garza. With a change of scenery, it might help Olt, who has had trouble seeing the ball this year. Cubs prospects are usually hot commodities, and the price of his cards jumped after becoming a member of the Cubs organization. 2010 Bowman Chrome autographs jumped from around the $15 mark to $30 after the trade.

2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Christian Yelich Autographs

Yelich was perhaps one of the best pure hitters in the Minor Leagues before his Big League call up this week. He showed why he was ready for the Show when he went 3 for 4 in his debut. Because debuts mean hype, Yelich’s 2010 Bowman Chrome autographs jumped from $30 to $50 this week.

2010 Bowman Chrome Wil Myers Autographs

Maybe he doesn’t have the hype that he used to have when he was a top 5 prospect, but Wil Myers has been a very productive Big-Leaguer so far this year. So far, he is batting .328 with 7 home runs and has been a regular for the Rays. His 2010 Bowman Chrome autographs are now up to $77 after selling for $55 last week. A BGS 9.5 Orange refractor autograph sold for a whopping $790.

2011 Bowman Chrome Jonathan Villar Autographs

Jonathan Villar made his Major League debut on July 22, going 1 for 4. Villar has plus speed and can hit for average, which makes him valuable to the Houston Astros. However, it’s hard to believe that he will be there when Carlos Correa gets called up in a year or two. Villar’s card values shot up after his debut. Base 2011 Bowman Chrome autographs went from $3 to $10 after his debut.

2013 Bowman Chrome CJ Edwards Autographs

The other player dealt in the Matt Garza trade, CJ Edwards has had a great season compared to his trade counterpart. Edwards has gone 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA this season and was the Rangers 14th best prospect going into the season according to Baseball America. After the trade, Edwards’ 2013 Bowman Chrome autographs jumped from around the $10-$15 mark to the $20-$25 mark. Not as much as a jump as Olt, but definitely noteworthy.

2010 Donruss Elite Brandon Workman Autographs

Workman isn’t one of the top prospects, but he held his own in the Minor Leagues. Workman made his first career start for the Red Sox on July 14 and was impressive. In his two starts this year, he has pitched at least 6 innings and has given up only two runs in each start. Workman’s Elite autographs /450 have jumped from $3 to $10-$15 after his solid two starts.

Dang! All my cards are packed up for an upcoming move. I am sitting on some Olt, Archer and Edwards autos. They will be topping the cold list by the time I get them out of boxes.

On the bright side, I pulled 2 Yelich autos from ITG clearance boxes from BO last week and have some IP Workman autos from when he was in Salem.

Thanks as always for doing this. I really enjoy it.

The jump on Rivera early autos has been huge. I was planning on buying assuming would jump toward years end but it seems the all-star break really shone the spotlight on him and the increase has been impressive.
