Change is in the air.

BY JEFF WILSON

Joey Gallo did not travel with Double A Frisco ahead of the RoughRiders’ next road trip, and the Texas Rangers were mulling whether to promote him to Triple A Round Rock or the major leagues as the replacement for Adrian Beltre.

Sources said that the Rangers were planning to bump Gallo, their top prospect, up a level before Beltre was injured Sunday. Beltre has a sprained left thumb and a cut that required four stitches, and he said that he won’t try to grip a bat for 12 days.

The Rangers could promote second baseman Rougned Odor from Round Rock to resume everyday duties for the Rangers and slide Adam Rosales to third base, one of the five positions he plays.

The Rangers were off Monday ahead of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Gallo is batting .314 with 1.061 OPS, a stat that adds on-base and slugging percentages. He has nine homers and 31 RBIs, both team-highs even though he missed the first two weeks after having surgery on his left foot.

If Gallo is promoted to the majors, the Rangers believe that he will be an asset to a lineup that will be without its cleanup hitter for three weeks while not hurting them defensively. If he goes to Round Rock, the Rangers will have taken the cautious route to allow his development to continue.

Gallo, 21, has enormous raw power and has a better approach at the plate, but still has some issues to work out. For instance, he is batting only .176 (13 for 74) against left-handers since joining Frisco last season.

If Gallo were to be added to the Rangers, he would join a lefty-heavy lineup that features Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton, Shin-Soo Choo and Mitch Moreland.

The Rangers would also need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Gallo.
