Hello all, one year ago today I smoked my last cigarette. How is this baseball card related? Well I'll get to that.

I smoked for 16 years and have failed to quit several times. I happened upon a lung infection 13 months ago that lingered for a bit and another nasty one came back about a year ago. I decided that I finally was going to quit and I did, cold turkey, on 12/20/2011. Have had been on the jones a few times and was incredibly difficult the first few weeks but I am so happy I quit.

Back to baseball. One thing I noticed in the first few weeks was I had more pocket money. A lot more. So I started putting $7 a day into a box. A pack of Parliament Lights were $7 a pack when I quit and so i thought it was "found" money. This money accrued to a large amount and I used my "I quit smoking money" on the following goodies :p

Card 1: 1973 Schmidt Rookie Card

I've always wanted to upgrade my beater copy. I've been building various 60's and 70's sets in PSA 7 so I thought this would be a great excuse to upgrade

Card 2: 2012 Topps Chrome Strasburg Auto Blue Refractor Auto

I usually stay away from prospects/hot cards/current stuff but I love the appeal of the blue refractors and a rookie auto is something I wanted to have. Love the look of this one and unless I missed something I think I got it at a fantastic price.

Card 3: Topps 2011 Triple Threads Utley 3/3

A card numbered 3/3 for the PC is always a great pickup

but when it you already have 1/3 and 2/3 its even better :D

Card 4: 2009 Topps Series 1 Howard World Series Auto/Patch /50

I've been trying to get this card from this guy forever and most certainly overpaid for it.

This was the last card added and I only justified over paying to complete this:

Side note, any fan of the team that wins the WS, scoop these up early, they are hard to come by after a while as they always get locked up in team collections.

Card 5: T206 1909 Joe Birmingham

I've been building the T206 set, which is a loooong journey :x but a very fun and rewarding one. :) Mr. Birmingham is my first of the four T206 Horizontal cards

Card 6: T206 1909-11 Tom Guiheen

Mr. Guiheen is not only my first Virgina State League 206....

......but has this on the back, also my first.

Card 7: T206 1909-11 Christy Mathewson Dark Cap

Knocking off a HOF from a set this old is always a great day!

Card 8: N28 1887 Allen and Ginter John L. Sullivan

I am distantly related to John L. and this card, with a Cominsky, was always on my radar. Got this cheap and Mr. Sullivan is currently at SGC being freed from his ghastly BGS prison.

Card 9: 1933 Goudey Gehrig

What's to be said about this? With my red portrait Cobb, this card is now in my top five, and never parted with, cards. I've looked at this thing everyday since I have had it

For shame! You have replaced one addiction with another. :p

Congrats on staying smoke free. That extra money is definitely nice to have, and the extra years you should have now are even better. I'm a former smoker myself also coming up on an anniversary, so I know what a pain in the ass it is to do. Good job.

Great job on putting down the smokes, quite chewing myself just over 15 months ago. I would love to be able to put the extra money towards some cardboard but stacking it up for the wedding of my fiance's dreams. Only thing wrong with her is she does not like my cards and makes me store them under the bed so they are out of sight.

Congrats on quitting. I hope you can stick to it. I quit for 6 years ( cold turkey as well, got sick as well too) at one point. Sadly went through some really hard times and started back 2 years ago. But I'm about to try to give them up again. Oh and sweet cards!!

Maine of course......
Congrats- never smoked in my life so glad you are not blowing your second hand smoke in my face anymore ;) wishing you continued good luck since I understand it is a tough addiction to kick.

Nice cards too, just imagine the stash you'd have accumulated if you "made the trade" sooner :D The Gehrig is a beauty as is the Matty!!!

Congrats Lance. I thank the lord that I never started smoking, as I'd probably never be able to quit. I can't even quit energy drinks!!

And that Gehrig makes my underwear tight. What a card.
