I know the question was not intended for me, but I always keep in mind that when I am the high bidder on something there was someone just a buck or two behind me willing to pay that price. So in the case of a lot, I would buy the lot, keep my card out, and try to make most of my money back. I actually had a situation like that with Buhner at one point and passed. It may have been a mistake - I'm not sure because I wasn't quite as close to finishing as I am now.

FYI, the two recent eBay listings for a 1998 Topps Tek set, the ones with the pictures of the checklist, each say they are for a "small set". Made me curious so I checked with the seller. The "small sets" are sets of the four and three cards pictured.

If this is an unfair question, please accept my apology. The only reason I ask is because I often struggle with this question if it were a situation I might find myself in possibly in the near future. Did you win that auction or have someone else send you the card after they won it? The angle I'm coming from is...how much would I be willing to bid on an auction knowing I only need one card from a particular lot, or, in this case, a 90 card set. I recall that auction ended pretty high.

Again, I don't mean to pry, so please no need to answer if this is inappropriate.
It is cool, no issues with your question, I have been part of FCB for a long time and nothing to hide... I won the auction and decided late in the process to go all in. Pattern #2 for Belle is one being seeked by a lot of collectors both players and set and it sounds like my pattern is the first that anyone has seen for a LONG time... I ran out of patience and therefore ended up WAY over paying but did get the entire Tek set in the process but obviously all different patterns. I would have to look back but basically paid $1 per card for the 90 card set and I just replaced the Belle with one of my dubs, so I have the full set, which is cool I guess hahaha

That said, I do have about 15 Belle doubles and at this point I do not think I will be attempting a second set. If anyone is collecting Belle or White Sox, let me know.

Big thanks to RustyGreerFan ; just wrapped up a trade in which he sent a few patterns of various players my way, all of which fill holes in my '98 Tek checklist.

So, you have a Gwynn in that set? What pattern is it? :)

I can look tonight. I have the entire 90 card set, just each card is a different pattern. I have probably 30-40 other doubles from the set too. I've listed them up here previously but it has been a while. I can try and just load them all up again for everyone :)

Always want to help others out...

I only need 5 left for my Ripken Tek set, would love to buy or trade for ones I need.

I need patterns 1, 4, 14, 40, and 52.

I have about 30 doubles also if anyone is in need or to trade.

Thanks

Is that #96 you have listed for Thome really #90 by chance? Let me know. Thanks.

I was really surprised the Delgado Gold Label 1/1 sold for under $40 last night. Not necessarily because he was a really good hitter, but because I thought there was a group of collectors out there that fought over extreme rarities like that. I'm wondering now if it depends on which 1/1 it is (from what set) and what our perception of that issue is. For example, perhaps the release of so much weird gold label backdoor/trash bin stuff has cheapened legit pack-pulled 1/1s? Or the fact that there are actually nine 1/1s for each player in each year of Gold Label? Or perhaps the fact that Gold Label Masterpieces are visibly no different than base (from the front) as compared to say a Skybox Metal Gem Masters 1/1s which seem to have a market of its own regardless of player.

$40 for any legit 1/1 for anyone, let alone a good player is a good price IMO. Those are the type of buys I wish I was watching and bought, but don't go looking for things like that. Nice looking cards as well.
