1952 Mantle Poised to Pass $1 Million
October 24, 2016 By Rich Mueller

A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card graded 8.5 by PSA stands poised to become the hobby’s next million dollar card.* One of only a dozen graded at NM/MT+ or higher, the card soared to $800,000 in the first few days of bidding at Heritage Auctions.* With the 19.5% buyer’s premium, the price currently sits at $956,000 and the auction still has over three weeks to run.

Two other 8.5s have sold in the past, but it’s been awhile.* In 2010, one sold for $149,500 and in 2013, another realized $272,550.* A PSA 9 sold ten years ago for $282,588 but no 9s or 10s have sold publicly since that time.

Prices for 1952 Mantles have skyrocketed over the last couple of years with the last two public sales of PSA 8 (NM/MT) examples stretching over $500,000.* Prior to 2014, only one had reached six figures.

Heritage is also offering a T206 Honus Wagner graded PSA 2*with the current bid, including the buyer’s premium, at $501,900

is there really that much excitement over 52 mantles? I'm lost my excitement of 1952 mantles because of all the reproductions topps has made in the last 20 years. Thanks topps for killing 1952 mantles for me.

I think what killed it for you, actually helped increase the popularity for other people.

I know I love the original 1948 Bowman set because of the 2001 Bowman Heritage set that came out when I was 18. I thought the reprints were awesome, and they connected the newer generation of collectors with a classic set. I think something similar happened with the 1952 Mantle.

Rosen made so much money off of robbing people it's ridiculous. Check out his youtube videos and what he bought and offered. And before that my dad and I were at a show in Atlantic City and he was shoveling out $100 bills like crazy buying stacks and stacks of just '52 Topps Mantles and high #'s in the mid-90's. He made a killing and doesn't have to do much of anything anymore.

Nuts... Rosen should have held out on his flips from the 52 find :)

Yeah, he definitely profitted of the deal origianlly. I just assume he/not many saw these prices coming. Money talks, he was able to buy because he had the cash.
