The way parallels have gotten today with some sets having in excess of 13-15 different colors/variations it got me thinking to a simpler time. If you go back to 1998 the leaf 50th set had quite a few with the fractal matrix cards, but for the most part sets had maybe 3-5 at most. Think pacific, score, Donruss etc. I was looking through my cards and put this one together as an example of what I would consider an early rainbow IMO. I would love to see some others so please feel free to share. yes I know these cards come from technically two sets, but they are in essence the same card..

One of my Rainbows.

Cal Ripken Jr. 1998 Donruss Preferred Base, Preferred Seating, Preferred Collections, Preferred Collections Prized, Precious Metals

Nelson, decent cards but it appears you are missing the incredibly tough base card. Good luck on completing your rainbow. Thanks for sharing that other stuff though .

The Select certified rainbows are pretty frickng awesome. Does anyone have a 1998 leaf Fractral matrix "rainbow" of anyone? I wouldn't even know where to start with one or how many "parallels" there were as there were X, Y,Z plus base die cuts, wood, nylon, all kind of stuff. That would be cool to see.

This was Grace's rainbow. The numbered ones were /900 (Leaf Fractal Materials), Y-Axis /100 (Leaf Fractal Materials), and Z-Axis /50 (Leaf) and /20 (Leaf Fractal Materials).

Very cool, but a quick question, don't they have gold ones too?? Plus some more die cuts? Here are some of the gold ones...

It's literally almost impossible to explain all the variations. Different players were printed on different materials. You can try to decipher it all here...

http://baseballcardpedia.com/index.php/1998_Leaf_Fractal_Foundations

Fractal Materials

Inserted at a rate of one per pack, cards from this 200-card set parallel the base Leaf Fractal Foundation set. The cards are printed on real "feel of the game" materials. 100 cards were printed on Plastic (P) and each is serial numbered to 3250 copies. Of the 50 cards printed on Leather (L), 1000 serial-numbered cards of each were made. Only 500 copies of the 30 printed on Nylon (N) were made; and of the 20 printed on Wood (W), each is serial-numbered to 250.

Each Fractal Materials card is also available as a die-cut. The first 200 copies of each X-Axis (regardless of material), 100 of each Y-Axis, and 50 copies of each Z-Axis Fractal Material cards are die-cut.

In other words, a "PX" card is serial-numbered to 3250 copies, with 200 die-cut and 3050 non die-cuts. An "LY" is numbered to 1000, with 100 die-cut and 900 non die-cut, and of the "NZs", 50 were die-cut and 450 weren't.

For brevity's sake, each cards Material and Axis designation are listed in the base set.

Z2-Axis: All 200 cards are available in this parallel. Each Z2 Axis card is serial-numbered to 20 copies.

After I wrote that post I looked it up as well. A little crazy to try and make sense of it, so that would be the rainbow. Very cool.
