Drew Stubbs: Anyone notice what he is doing in the #7 slot?

I found these stats very interesting. Since Drew Stubbs was moved out of the leadoff spot, to the #7 position in the lineup, his numbers have exploded:

25 G, 91 AB: .330 AVG, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 19 R, .386 OBP, .571 SLG, .958 OPS, 24% K-rate

His leadoff numbers:
22 G, 83 AB: .145 AVG, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 13 R, .242 OBP, .265 SLG, .507 OPS, 35% K-rate


Has anyone ever seen such a large disparity in numbers seemingly caused only by changing position in the lineup (i.e. a 450 point OPS spike)? I suppose since the sample size is pretty small, that he could have just been mired in a massive slow-start-slump, and came out of it around the same time he was dropped in the lineup ... but that would be pretty coincidental.

Maybe the move's correlated, maybe not. It's nice to see him succeed, though.

every spot in the batting order has a different role and a different mindset


Perhaps he adapts to the broader definition of a 7 hitter than the tunnel vision get on base at all cost mentality of a lead off hitter.

Leadoff hitters tend to take a lot more pitches. That would probably explain why he struck out more before.
