2020 Has been a bad year. So far there have been six Hall of Famers pass away. Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford & now Joe Morgan. 2020 and 1972 are the only years to have six players to pass. Unfortunately we still have almost 12 full weeks left this year.

The only other year to have six Hall of Famers pass away was 1989. They were: Lefty Gomez, Willie Wells, Judy Johnson, Jocko Conlan, Bill Terry & Warren Giles. Wells wasn’t inducted until 1997. Also, of the six inducted only four were players. Jocko Conlan was an umpire and Warren Giles was inducted as an Executive (N.L. President 1952-69).

The year with the most members to pass was 1972 with seven. They included: Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson, Gabby Hartnett, Pie Traynor, George Weiss, Dave Bancroft & Zack Wheat. Clemente was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 in a special election that waived the mandatory five-year waiting period. Weiss was elected as an Executive mainly with the Yankees.

My information may have errors. If you see anything that is incorrect don’t hesitate to post a correction.

Hopefully we can finish the year without adding to the list.

I was wondering about that, as were probably a lot of people. Thanks for doing the homework. Someday maybe Hodges will be on the list of HOFers who died in 1972.
