Players really get hurt with WAR if they were not good fielders. Also Juan did not have an especially long career to rack up the totals (just 11 full-time seasons).

Also, WAR, is different per position as a replacement player of one position isn't always the same as another position therefore it is a little out of context to compare players from different positions, but WAR is a great stat.

That's why WAR has positional adjustments built in. It can absolutely be used to compare players across positions.

WAR takes into account that Juan was a well below average fielder for most of his career, and while he has gaudy offensive numbers without context, they were only 29% better than league average because he played in the most offensive minded environment the game had seen until the last couple of years.

WAR is also a rate stat so Juan's relatively short career (7,155 PAs) hurts his career total.

Bell*, Kinsler, and Harrah were all above average offensively, though not as much as Gonzalez, and a lot better than he was defensively. Bell (3.7/600 PAs) and Kinsler (3.2 per 600) are the only ones actually rated substantially better by WAR than Gonzalez (3.0/600). Harrah has a higher career WAR but it was in about 1,600 more PAs so they are about equally rated when you look at a per 600 PAs figure.

Hough has 10 less WAR in over 2x times as many seasons as Gonzalez. WAR, at least Fangraph's version, certainly doesn't say Hough was better than Gonzalez.

*Bell honestly has an overlooked borderline Hall of Fame case. He was Brooks Robinson's equal defensively at his peak but he couldn't sustain it as long as Brooks did. He was better offensively than Brooks too.

Sal Bando was almost as good offensively as Juan (121 career wRC+ to Juan's 129) and he was a solidly above average defender that Juan wasn't.

Campy's higher total is just because of a longer career. He averaged 2.8 WAR/600 PAs but he had almost 2,500 more PAs than Gonzo.

Carney Lansford has less WAR in more PAs.

Miguel Tejada averaged 2.6 WAR/600 PAs. This is another case of accumulation not painting the whole picture.

I was using WAR from Baseball Reference, which has Juan at 38.7 and Carney at 40.4. It does have Juan slightly higher on WAR per 162 games, 3.7 to 3.5.
