I think this sucks. Privatize the USPS, fedex and UPS are doing alirght delivering 6 days a week, or cut out the union. They have excellent pension plans and by not fixing the problem now, it's just going to get worse as time goes on and more postal workers retire. Maybe next year they will be looking to cut out another day.

You want to pay $9 for every card you buy to be delivered?

By the way, UPS only delivers on Saturday if you pay for Saturday delivery.

Nobody wants to pay $9 dlvd for a card, but I think by cutting a day they are not fixing the problem. They are going under due to pension plans and lack of mail volume. Do they think that the mail volume is going to suddenly increase or the money needed for pensions will decrease, especially as medicine improves and people live longer?

It's a small, temporary fix for a much bigger problem. This will work for, maybe 5, years before they are in the red deeper.

Also, Don't forget they also said they are going to gradually charge more to deliver mail which could result in loss of business as fed-ex and UPS become close to the USPS in price (for larger packages).

not good.

i say cut wednesday instead. what about people that work 9-5 m-f and can only get to the po on saturdays?

PO? What's that? ONLINE, dude. there isn't much that can't be done on the USPS or 3rd party websites nowdays. I do my shipment prep stuff online and hand the packages to my carrier when my mail gets delivered.

as for day to cut, Saturday is perfect. I am lucky to get anything on a Saturday (whereas my mail volume is pretty good M-F) plus if I were still working in an office instead of self-employed, the office wouldn't be open on Saturday. Other than those working retail/restaurant, healthcare, or public services, who really works on a saturday? I bet a lot of money and time could be saved not having to deliver mail to empty office buildings on a Saturday.

I also agree with cutting delivery on Wednesdays. If you cut Saturdays, that is two days of no delivery (Sat and Sun). By cutting mid-week delivery (Wednesday or Thursday), there would never be two consecutive days of non-delivery.

Except for the "National" holidays that get observed on Mondays.

Great. Now eBay buyers can gripe because their package isn't there on Monday that they paid for at 8PM on Friday.

And to the poster wondering why they don't just change things: Changing anything at the PO literally requires an act of Congress.

I'm not really psyched about it, but what can you do.

One thing I've wished that the USPS would look into doing would be a sort of cross between their traditional Money Order service, Western Union and Paypal; you go into the post office and pay them to electronically send funds across to another USPS PO or to a person's email account, something along those lines. It would help them to make up on some of the lost revenue from decreased mail volume.

Well, that happens maybe a handful of times duiring the year. I meant on a regular basis.

It would probably be cheaper to close things down on consecutive days from a facities standpoint and for other reasons.

How would it be cheaper from a facilities standpoint? And what "other reasons?"

plus, on saturday. it's usually a deliveryperson that doesn't know his arse from his elbow. seriously. every saturday we get someone else's mail, and every saturday a neighbor brings us our mail.

eliminating saturday delivery would just be culling the herd.

I'm in favor if it keeps cost down for a bit. There is no significant loss of service to me.

HVAC for example may need to stay on if you're just closing down for a day, but probably not if two. The other reasons would be administrative in nature.

By closing in mid-week for a day and not on Saturday, you're closing down and starting up all your processes and procedures twice as often.

They aren't going to turn the heat or ac off but they'll drop or raise the temperature accordingly. A 2 degree temperature change is as much as 25% less cost for heating or cooling. It completely amazes me.

And the talk is just stopping delivery for a day, not closing facilities entirely. There will still be people processing the mail, sorting it and getting it ready for delivery at facilities, so the heat, ac etc will be on. It will just be the delivery people.

As someone that works in the HVAC industry, that example is incorrect. Two days in a row vs. 2 days spread out will not affect how an HVAC system is run. The controls for the system will have night time set back or off hours set back, so the system will never completely be off but rather only heat or cool to a lesser extent than peak hours. The only savings facility wise that may be possible that I see would be if their electric utility provider charges increased amounts for peak hour use. If this is the case they would most likely receive a better electrical rate on weekends instead of during the week because there is a higher demand for electricity during the week while businesses are open.

I work for the Post Office and yeah mail volume has dropped significantly..... I hope they continue with the 6 day delivery but if they do eliminate a day it should be saturday.... As has been stated here, the post office will still have services on saturdays, just no delivery.. the worst possible thing that could happen is private mail delivery... I have only been at the Post office 3 yrs and is a good job, but I do not delivery the mail, I work in a processing center.. to people here that think it is great to cut back to 5 days a week delivery, well I hope in your field then something drastic happens to take away jobs... that is what this going to do.... and the thing is, it will effect everyone that uses the postal service, whether in less delivery, or whatever...... I do not know alot of what is going on, but if they do cut that, I bet , and I do not know this, but I bet services for overnight and stamps and everything else is going to be effected..... they are out to get rid of the deficit, which means cut jobs, raise prices on services .. that is just my guess as I said I have no inside info..... just concerned about my job and my family

They should have cut Tuesday. Mail sent on Saturday generally arrives on Monday and mail sent on Monday usually arrives Wednesday leaving Tuesday as the slowest mail delivery day.
