Upper Deck and Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio’s Estate Enter Into New Exclusive Partnership

A limited-edition Joe DiMaggio card (#0) was inserted into 2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball to commemorate the agreement

North Las Vegas, NV (February 11, 2009) – In December, the multi-year agreement between Upper Deck and Joe DiMaggio’s estate to produce trading cards of the legendary “Yankee Clipper” became exclusive. The deal includes memorabilia and cut signature cards as well.

As a way of commemorating the newfound exclusive partnership, Upper Deck produced a very limited Joe DiMaggio card (#0), which packed out inside Upper Deck’s 2009 Series One Baseball release last week. The card features “Joltin’ Joe” next to a chalkboard after he tied the Major League Baseball consecutive games hitting streak record at 44. On the chalkboard it calls out “44 EQUALS RECORD” with a smiling DiMaggio kneeling behind it.

“We are thrilled to be able to work with the estate of one of the biggest names in baseball history,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck’s senior brand manager. “Collectors and sports fans should be excited about finding Joe DiMaggio content inside of many of Upper Deck’s 2009 baseball card releases. In this day and age when records fall frequently, DiMaggio still holds one of the most amazing baseball achievements of all time.”

Perhaps this is in backlash towards the Basketball/Panini agreement? Perhaps UD will try and become a bigger player in both the Baseball and Football markets because they cannot produce a licensed Basketball product....Food for thought.

Joe D trivia: what company was going to offer him a marketing deal if his streak had gone a certain number?

It was Heinz. Though I'm sure any other company associated with a number would be in there, too.

Joe D brought to you by the San Fernando Valley and the number 69!
