Does this kid have a realistic chance to earn an OF spot for the Pirates?? What kind of player can be if he starts hitting for more power?

He has to learn to play a corner OF spot, he has looked awful in ST in the outfield. Cutch will be the CF for a good while. He also needs to learn the strike zone much better. The Pirates have good options right now in the OF with Presley and Tabata that the team wants to see what they can do. No need to rush Marte.

Tabata and Cutch have solid spots, I dont see how its so crazy that he couldnt beat out presley. Garret Jones gets some time in Right, but could spend more time at 1b if Marte keeps killing it.

The Pirates have their OF set, McLouth will get plenty of AB's as well...It would take an injury for Marte to make the team. Keep an eye on how he plays in Indy this season, because Gorkys Hernandez will also get a look if someone gets hurt in the OF.

Baseball America's scouting report on Marte,

"He's good enough right now to be an above average defensive center fielder in the major leagues with outstanding range and a strong arm.... He's so good defensively in centerfield that he could eventually push all star Andrew Mccutchen to left. If Marte continues to add power, he could be an all star.

Marte has always been regarded as a superb defender. A similar report was written a year ago in the 2011 book.

The thought of a Josh Bell, Starling Marte, Andrew Mccutchen offense would be incredible.

Yeah, did you watch him play at all this spring? He looked disasterous in the OF. He isn't pushing McCutchen anywhere. The team already put out about 100 statements to this affect already. Barring an injury he is going down. His only hope of playing this season is in RF.
