Rocky Bleier was drafted into the Vietnam War after one season in the NFL and earned himself a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He wasn't supposed to be able to play football again because of shrapnel in his leg, but he managed to play through it and help Pittsburgh win four Super Bowls over a decade or so. There aren't many pro athletes I respect as much as Bleier.
You don't see as many players in the modern era as you did "back in the day". Caleb Campbell was drafted in 2008 by the Lions, but served in the Army until 2010, then picked up playing football with Detroit.
