While other fans look at a possible pennant race or a few more pieces to be put into a solid future us lowly Royals fans get to look at another season of.....this. Over the last 17 seasons the Royals have had a grand total of 1 winning season and since 2008 have finished 4th or worse every year.

After watching a bit of today's game and seeing Hochaver give up another 5 runs I decided to find out how many starting pitchers have 100+ games starter and a career ERA above 5.00. Not surprisingly Luke Hochevar with 117 starts and a 5.27 ERA is high on the list. Surprising is how many former Royals are:

It may be difficult to see the bold text, but there are 11 players on this list that have played for the Kansas City Royals. 5 Players on the list played before the KC Royals were even played their first season in 1969. So out of the 29 players that had the opportunity 38% of all the players that have a life time ERA of 5+ and 100starts have suited up for the Royals.

An interesting tidbit. Between 1965-1988 a grand total of 0 players had an ERA over 5 and 100 starts.

Alcides Escobar has been a bright spot for you this year, and Bubba Starling is mashing in rookie ball. There is some hope at least.

Rookie ball is a long ways away, and while we have offensive threats on the team and coming up soon (like Wil Meyers) the problem is starting pitching. This year's 5 man rotation was suppose to be: Bruce Chen, Luke Hochevar, Felipe Paulino, Danny Duffy, Jonathan Sanchez. Paulino and Duffy are both done for the season with Tommy John Surgery, Jonathan Sanchez was traded for Jeremy Guthrie after not being able to go 2 innings in back to back games.

The current rotation is Bruce Chen, Luke Hochevar, Jeremy Guthrie, Luis Mendoza, Will Smith whom have a combined 5.78 ERA, 21-32 with 1 CG on the year.

For the second year in a row the KC Royals bullpen is leading the league in IP. At this point our team has 398.1 IP from relievers which is second in the MLB in IP behind Colorado whom has 405.2. The Royals have 30IP more than the third place team. Royals starting pitching has the second fewest IP and third highest opponent batting average.

Orodizzi is looking good as well. I know it sucks losing, but the Royals have a ton of young talent.

Alot more room for hope than Cubs fans have! Theo and his boys are ALOT farther away from any chance of competing for Playoff spots.

Does that help?

BTW, I gotta admit I was shocked that Hochevar had that many starts under his belt...

Between that and watching a prospect boot the ball to give them the win does help a bit.

If they had pitching they'd be over .500 right now.

I'm going to be in KC in a week and a half and I plan on going to a game the weekend after next. They can score runs.. they did last year. Their pitching just won't keep them in it.

Pitching wins games, yo. Why do you think the Sox have a <.500 record? (Hint: It's not because they don't score runs....)

A's have the lowest ERA in the AL, and they are first in the WC. It's a simple recipe.

I have MLB extra innings on Directv, and if I am not watching the Brewers Suck ass again, I am watching The Royals, at least until the late games start.

I don't miss to many Hosmer, Escobar, Gordon, and my personal favorite Moustakas at bats. When Wil Myers gets the well deserved call-up its just another reason for me to watch. I know the pitching is behind the hitting but once Odorizzi gets called up, I doubt I will miss watching to many of those starts as well. There is alot to look forward to on this team. Really!

I think we Royals fans were one season too early for our optomism, but if we can get Duffy, Wood, Soria, and Paulino back next year, plus off season and the two hot prospects then it's looking a lot better...

However then I look at players like Chris George, Mike MacDougal, Jeff Granger, and Jim Pittsley....and I'm a bit less sure.

Bright futures and great prospects in your system... sucks! Indians fans have been fed this optimistic BS for a decade now. We're finally here, and it sucks. And at least Royals fans don't have to get their hopes all up. This is two years in a row now that Cleveland has sat atop the division for most of the first half, only to fall on their faces and let their fans down. Sniffle. They do try, but I don't know... bad luck or something. They should have kept CC, but I guess they really couldn't afford him, but when they do sign a contract it's terrible. Sizemore for example, he could be great if he was ever healthy, but he's not. 2010 he got $5.M to play in 33 games. In 2011 it was $7.7M for 71 games. This year we're only giving him $5M again, which is great since he's played in exactly 0 games. I know some people are thinking "$5M is nothing, that's a veritable bargain!" It's 1/10th of the entire Indians payroll! That really hurts. How about Hafner? 2008- $8M for 57 games; 2009- $11.5M for 94 games; 2011 $13M for 94 games; 2010 was almost a full season for him, 118 games for just $11.5M! And he's only played half the games this year.

I don't know what it is, bad luck, or God really does hate the Indians I guess... I think I'm going to go back to being a Chief Wahoo fan and not paying any attention to the team like I did for so many years.

"Are you an Indians fan?"
"No, I just love Chief Wahoo. Even though the team is so terrible, he never loses that winning smile..."

So, good luck KC fans. I hope your bright future turns out much better than Cleveland's....

At least you had the 90's. Some of those teams had to be some of the most dominate in baseball, especially the strongest ones that the AL Central has ever seen. Hated when they went to Jacob's Field and had to face Jim Thome, Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton, Sandy Alomar Jr. , Omar Visquel, Carlos Baerga, Manny Ramirez and a few HOF and borderline HOFers

You never know - Cincinnati was terrible for years, but then they drafted great for several seasons straight. Votto, Bruce, Leake, Bailey, Cueto, and a plethora of bullpen guys all finally came together at the same time. Then we used our excess prospects to trade for Mat Latos, (and Arroyo several years back). We picked up Brandon Phillips as a rule 5 draftee (from the Indians - Thank You Very Much!). Now they have the best record in baseball with a reasonable payroll. And the team chasing them in the division (The Pirates) has been as awful as any team over the past 20 years. So you never know, sometimes it pays off. The problem is, once these players become superstars, you can't afford to keep them. I was shocked that the Reds found the money to sign Votto and Phillips this year.
