I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I enjoy the thrill of busting wax as many do. However, it seems like I am constantly losing money and keeping no cards. In fact, today I busted a few different products sold everything back to the shop and still owed him $250.. When did you decide the thrill of busting wax isn't worth the money damages. How do you cope with the addictive nature of not being able to bust

Similar story. Put a bunch of wax on your cc. Bust said wax. Pull nothing. Still owe bunch of money to cc. :benson:

2008 was the last year I busted a case.

I'd rather hoard singles, but I'm thankful for those that do bust.

I used to bust quite a bit, but now only open a few boxes a year. For me it just wasn't worth it anymore. I would find myself only caring about how much all the cards were worth and what I could have bought instead. Generally when a product releases, I will wait to see some breaks and identify any cards I want to get. If I like the set or want to have some fun and chase a superfractor, I will grab a couple of boxes; otherwise I just buy singles.

The last new box I busted was 2005 BCDP when it came out.
I do occasionally rip older junk wax from the '80s or 90s for fun or to build a set I don't own.
But as for new boxes, it's just not worth the eventual letdown of wasting money, when I could have bought singles of cards or complete sets that I really want.
But I appreciate all the box and case busters out there who make it possible for me to buy those singles and sets.

Probably narrowing down my collection to specific players was the main reason. I used to collect anything and I used to bust a lot of wax. Yes, money was a factor but when it got to the point that I was keeping less than what I was selling off it just didn't make sense anymore. Now I only buy a box or 2 each year or some loose packs when picking up supplies just to scratch the itch but its pretty easy knowing there's zero chance I could pull anything PC from current wax

I bought a case of 06 BDPP and didn't pull any top autos and nothing higher than a blue refractor(no gold, orange, red). I would much rather buy singles of Cubs players I collect anyways

People who bust a couple of cases of wax of each product are a lot like degenerate gamblers, they only remember the cases that made money and never talk about the cases were the lost their asses.

I never have been lucky so I only open for fun when I get a chance and don't do it religously like some folks do. But 1999 and 2000 products just killed me for their lack of content and how few and far between hits were. Boxes were still 70 to 80 bucks and you were guaranteed nothing.

I stopped when I pulled this. I figured there was no where to go but down from there.

For me it was easy, they don't put Kirby Puckett in any new releases so I don't open anything. I also collect Justin Morneau but he stuff is pretty cheap so it makes much more sense to just pick up singles. I still pick up a blaster every once and awhile though.

When the cost of a pack tripled, the number of cards per pack was cut in half, and the value of each card fell 90% all at the same time. It also doesn't help that in a 660 card set, I'm lucky if there are 10 Astros cards.

I never stopped. I have cut back, but never stopped. My sons and I do it together and make a game of it. I only do the (relatively) low end stuff. No boxes over $100.

Did my first case with 2008 BDP. I had a blast and made probably 75% back in immediate value. Did three more cases and had varying success but enjoyed it every time.

Then came 2009, and I hit a complete dud case in 09 BDP. I hit a Chapman yellow plate and a Trout Ref Auto, but at the time Trout Ref Autos were only good for about $30 (glad I held that one!). I hit no autos better than Base Refractor, and overall I lost roughly $450 on the break. This is where I stopped with wax, because in addition to not getting value, I realized that instead of enjoying the break, I was cruising through looking for the big hit that never came, and was completely disappointed.

Since then, the only time I touch wax is special occasions like Christmas or the National; and I always do so without expecting to pull a single thing. It's for the fun, any good cards that come from the break are just icing on the cake. In doing this, I've found that I've slowed down to take the time to enjoy the breaks, appreciate the cards, and have fun with it.

Simply, R.O.I. Sure busting is fun, but to me its no different then going to a casino. Sure you can hit it big, but most of the time its a losing battle. It also helps to not buy wax when every shop within a reasonable distance closed a few years ago. Now when I bust anything I'm forced to buy retail, but I occasionally buy older product online for nostalgia.

I bought two cases in my life 2006, and 2008 Bowman. Both times.. I was screwed and did't even get a call back the next day. I pulled ZERO on both boxes.. screw it.. singles only..

its funny look at the box break forum and very rarely do you see people post their dude boxes. Now I have seem more case breaks being posted that were duds than individual boxes but it shows that people tend to only want to talk about their good breaks.
