It must be for a lot of people, because according to BaseballReference, its the one number worn by the most players.

Hard to be absolutely accurate with that since so many teams have lower #s retired that players can never pick. Still an interesting tidbit.

22 isn't my lucky number, but it's obvious it's the best number that can be worn because Kershaw is wearing it! ;)

Rickey did wear 22 for a short time in 1989 when returning to Oakland.

It shows on baseballreference.com that he wore 22 for a time in 1989 and then switched to 24 the same year. It also shows that Ron Hassey wore 24 and then switched to 27 in 1989. Perhaps they worked out a trade.

Solid point. I imagine that plays a big role in the lower numbers not being more popular.
