Jocko Conlon started his Major League career as a centerfielder for the Chicago White Sox but was pressed into service after a umpire working a game in which he was playing became overcome by heat. In these days there were only two umpires covering a Major League baseball game and if one fell ill a trusted member of one of the teams would be pressed into service to complete the umpire's assignment.

This began the career of Hall of Fame umpire Jocko Conlon who was known for the bow tie he wore around his neck as well as the fiery personality on the field. Conlon was respected by almost all that played the game and was one of the favorite targets of Giants/Dodgers manager Leo Durocher. Leo loved to argue with Conlon and in one instance, he tried to kick dirt on the arbiter and missed the ground resulting in a kick to Conlon's shin. Conlon, without missing a beat, kicked Durocher right back!

Jocko Conlon was born on December 6, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois and lived to the ripe old age of 90. In between this time he would work five World Series' and six All Star games during his career as an umpire. Conlon was also the last National League umpire to wear an outside chest protector and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.

I hope you enjoy today's photo of the day.

I recently ran across a few photos of Wally Moon who had a decent 12 year career with the Dodgers and Cardinals. Wally had a good arm while playing all three outfield positions and was also known to act in a few Hollywood movies as well as television during his time with the Dodgers. What he is more known for is his ever-present unibrow! God only knows why he never made two eye brows from the one he sported but he will forever be know as "the brow".

There is no relevance to this date with Wally but I thought, why not share this man's caterpillar above his eyes today on the Photo of the Day!
