Does anyone here know why the Yankees converted Montgomery to a set-up man and spot-starter when it appeared he was primed to be a closer? Looked like he was dominating as a closer in the minors, so what happened? In 3 minor league seasons he averages 13.6 K/9 (209K in 138 IN), and a 2.22 ERA.

This guy:

Yanks do that with relievers to work on other things. It has nothing to do with eventual role, just something like innings work, working on a pitch, exposure to different game situations. Don't read anything into it.
