On a number of the cards I've been buying recently I've noticed that in many cases the price for a raw copy and a BGS 9.5 is not all that different. I've seen this a number of times. Has this been the case for cards you have been buying? The card below is from an era when trimming was rampant so I would have expected there to be a premium simply because it is slabbled, but the mark-up is minimal.

Is this a trend or abberation?

Example:

This sold for $340 (another sold for $350 around the same time)

While this sold for $320

Cant speak for that Pujols card, but overall, 9.5 is expected when people submit, anything less is usually discarded as a failure.

What is amazing is the number of BGS 10's (TEN) that get pumped out nowadays
