ESPN -- The Los Angeles Dodgers placed ace Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career after feeling discomfort in a "more intense" throwing session on Saturday.

The move comes one day after telling manager Don Mattingly he no longer felt pain in his upper back. He had already been ruled out for Sunday's domestic opener for against the San Diego Padres. The hope is for him to pitch next Friday at Dodger Stadium in the team's home opener.

The move is retroactive to March 23 and Kershaw will be eligible to return April 7.

If Kershaw can't pitch Friday, Mattingly said his replacement might be Josh Beckett, who is eligible to come off the disabled list that day.

That is the way most of the super big contracts go just after a player signs them. Teams need to stop the madness. All baseball contracts should be a base signing and the laden with incentives, and no guarantee. You play you get paid. You play great you get paid great. You suck you get paid as such or sent packing with out getting any more pay. How effen hard is that.

What Nosterbor said, was what I just said to a friend after he signed that deal. I said he will end up on the DL before opening day.

I feel that way too, but it will never happen because the MLBPA is too powerful to allow the change in the sport from guaranteed contracts to incentive-laden contracts.

It seems like this should work both ways doesn't it? So the Dodgers should pay Kershaw an extra $50-$100 million for his play over the first few years of his career when he was severely underpaid (as compared to his peers and performance level).

Update today:

April, 1 -- ESPN -- SAN DIEGO -- The Los Angeles Dodgers are now certain that ace Clayton Kershaw will be out at least another two to three more weeks.

Kershaw consulted with team physician Neal ElAttrache, who reviewed an MRI scan and recommended Kershaw be placed on a rehab that includes a submaximal throwing program during that time frame.

He will then be re-evaluated to determine when he can start throwing at increased velocity. The team said there is still no time table for Kershaw's return beyond the two to three weeks.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Kershaw will need to begin a throwing progression that would culminate in a minor league rehab assignment before the team would feel comfortable using him to pitch in a major league game.

Kershaw originally was scheduled to play catch before Tuesday's game in San Diego, but trainer Stan Conte scratched that because of the damp, chilly weather.

"He's definitely far enough out now that he's going to have to have some kind of progression," Mattingly said. "In my mind, it's going to take some time."

ESPN's Buster Olney reported that Kershaw's injury, which the team is describing as inflammation in the upper back, is similar to an injury the Padres' Andrew Cashner had two years ago. Cashner missed two months with it.
Kershaw pitched 6 2/3 strong innings on Opening Night in Australia March 22, but felt some tightness in his back upon returning to Los Angeles and was put on the DL Saturday.
