I think the Yanks have changed direction on handling Banuelos. They were doing a lot of 3 IP appearances and he was a mess out there. Last three starts the gloves have come off and they're letting him go deeper and BAM 3 great starts: 14 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 11 K

Brian Cashman said early in the season that didn't want to run out Banuelos innings by this time and they would rather have him for late August and September for a possibly call up.

Yep, that was earlier in the season. Since then he said there's no way he's ready this year. He hasn't gotten close to the innings cap due to the minor things he's had and the pitch count limits. Now at the end of the season they're letting him go, likely just to hit somewhere close to the innings cap but also probably a "Screw it, he's an enigma now, let's see what we have now" thought process.
