Bergen County Prosecutor's Office
PARAMUS — A Paramus couple was charged on Monday with making and selling counterfeit sports trading cards on eBay, authorities said.
Andrew Mei, 34, and his fiancée, Deborah Fernandez, 37, face charges of theft by deception, identity theft and computer-related theft for allegedly making and selling counterfeit sports trading cards on eBay. Mei was arrested on Monday in their Coombs Drive home, and Fernandez was issued a summons, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a release.
The charges stem from a scam that authorities believe started at least six years ago. Mei allegedly purchased real sports memorabilia on eBay, then made copies of the items and sold them on the website. PayPal and eBay learned of the scam in April 2014 and notified the United States Postal Inspection Services, Molinelli said. As early as 2008, Mei sold fake trading cards, rare, gold coins and bars using his name and variations of his name, according to authorities.
eBay first learned of Mei's counterfeit sales in 2012 and shut down his accounts. But in March 2013, Mei created new eBay and PayPal accounts, using a stolen identity belonging to a victim in California, Molinelli said. Fernandez's bank accounts and credit cards were allegedly used in the fraudulent sales.
Mei is being held at the county jail on $75,000 bail. Fernandez is slated to appear in court on Tuesday.
Calls to the prosecutor's office for more information were not immediately returned.

Maybe it is time for PSA to look into re-engineering their holders to be more tamper evident. From what I understand these guys were buying real cards in PSA holders and making very high resolution copies and putting them back on the PSA holder. This type of crap has been going on for years (search Google for "WIWAG PSA") and you will see this is nothing new. In the WIWAG case they were putting lesser condition cards back in PSA holders so at least the cards were genuine but still, not what the cards were being sold as.

Great to hear! Even if it took years to come full circle.

And not to be a downer, am I right to think this probably got more attention from Law Enforcement 'cuz he stole the identity of the eBay seller?

PSA recently redesigned their holders. Folks over at the PSA boards say that the new design is similar to Beckett's holder now. I haven't actually examined one of the new holders yet though.

It is a lot better than it used to be.
Still not on the same level of Beckett in terms of being tamper proof
But to open a PSA slab - you gotta crack and break it open now like Beckett

Before a kitchen knife or a finger nail would have been sufficient

That is true. At a low price point pif $3-4, it is hardly a worry for most collectors who want to add something unique. These sellers are probably selling thousands of these though and I imagine they are making damn good money doing it. If they are wrongfully selling imagoes (players, team names, logos, etc) and the right group gets wind of it, then that is when it comes crashing down. It is no more than a modern, higher end border type card.
