"AUG. 27: Commissioner Bud Selig was in San Diego yesterday for the opening of the Padres’ Hall of Fame plaza — named Selig Plaza — and was asked by Jennifer Jensen of 10 News whether or not Aiken had been granted an extension on his signing window"

Never mind the Brady Aiken stuff, why is San Diego naming their HOF plaza after Bud Selig?! Does not compute! Gwynn Plaza? Ok Kroc Plaza? Makes some sense. Colbert Plaza? Our esteemed member would love that! But Selig Plaza? WTF?

Must be the money - probably made a significant contribution into HOF.

Did he have a big part in the Stadium getting built? That might be why.

Still sounds dumb to me though...

That is it. From padres.com

...the area will serve as a home to the Padres Hall of Fame and eventually statues in the plaza to honor Padres greats as well as a plaque to honor Selig, not just for his overall achievements to baseball during his 22-year tenure as Commissioner but the specific accomplishment of helping to keep baseball afloat in San Diego.
...
Several speakers praised Selig for his role in helping to keep baseball prospering in San Diego, first during its difficult financial period of 1993, the infamous "fire sale" that saw the trades of Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff and then, later, when the team was trying to get its downtown ballpark built.

"Your help in creating this beautiful ballpark ... it has truly reinvigorated downtown San Diego," said San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer. "You shared the vision for the ballpark and you saw what it meant for the fabric of our community. [Selig has] truly been an All-Star when it comes to supporting San Diego."

Still kind of silly when Gwynn, Kroc or even Jack Murphy probably should have had it named after them.

So they praise him for saving Baseball in San Diego? He was at the helm and approved the fire sale trades. He should have stopped them from happening. But look at this little ditty from his bio shall we

Selig became an increasingly vocal opponent of Commissioner Fay Vincent, and soon became the leader of a group of owners seeking his removal. Selig has never stated that the owners colluded, while Vincent has:
The Union basically doesn’t trust the ownership because collusion was a $280 million theft by Selig and Jerry Reinsdorf of that money from the players. I mean, they rigged the signing of free agents. They got caught. They paid $280 million to the players. And I think that’s polluted labor relations in baseball ever since it happened. I think it’s the reason MLBPA executive director Donald Fehr has no trust in Selig.[SUP][15][/SUP]
—Fay Vincent

but we reward him with supposedly saving baseball. The franchise in San Diego needs to be disbanded and moved to some other place.

Near Philly
Garvey's Gallery?

Plus, if all his kids and grandkids came to look at it, attendance would almost double...

I think the plaza thing is more like Selig's gift in the lame farewell tour that he'll be starting. Damn you Rivera and Jeter! ;)

If you aren't going to name a plaza after Gwynn, how about the beach? I assume people have fun at the beach behind the OF wall, just like it seemed Gwynn was always having fun playing the game. Perfect tie-in -- FUN!
