CanoScan 4400F here too...I bought mine a while ago for just over $100. It's an outstanding scanner. See sig for scans.

I use the HP 1500 All In One Ink Jet/Scanner/Copy. Works great for me. I don't know if you can still find it, but I'm sure the newer model would better. The printing quality is excellent. It's not the best out there, but it satisfies my needs. Here's a scan that I took with it. It was under $100.

I've been wanting to get a scanner soon too.My question is, say I have something other than singles to move like a 3 inch binder of stars.Scanner isn't going to get the job done.Is a digital camera the way to go?

First of all, NEVER judge a scanner by how well a raw card (or in a top loader) scans. Always look at scans of BGS slabs.

The Canon Lide 90: Cnet review

The CIS scanning element in this unit contributes to its compactness, but material to be scanned must be in direct contact with the scanning surface.

This is the problem with a CIS scanner. On BGS slabs, the card is off the surface by as much as 1/4-1/2", and that makes a HUGE difference.

You must have a scanner with a CCD element if you are thinking about scanning any graded cards. Any All-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax that is low priced is going to have the cheaper CIS scanning element.

Here are a few scans of cards in slabs with a CCD scanner (note the detail in the subgrade descriptions on the BGS slab):

You can find a CCD scanner under $100. I recommend the Canoscan 4400F, although mine is an HP.

That should be it...make sure you meet the hardware requirements with your laptop (RAM, Speed, etc).

You can do that with a CanoScan with the top open (it can be closed, but 3" may be pushing it...I'd have to check when I get home...I know it can accommodate some thickness).

Does the CanoScan 4400F work with Vista? The site i'm looking at at the moment doesn't list. Wondering if that's a mistake
