2016 Bowman Baseball First Look
By Ryan Cracknell | Hobby Editor
Prospects, autographs, Chrome and Refractors — it’s the Bowman way. 2016 Bowman Baseball stays the course with a major focus of young players as well as lots of colors to chase.
Once again, hobby boxes come with the promise of one autograph.
Base Set and Prospects
With so much in the product centered on prospects, the 2016 Bowman Baseball base set is where you’re going to find most of the veteran content. It also has a strong rookie card crop of standouts like Kyle Schwarber and Miguel Sano.
Although technically inserts, the Prospects are often treated like a set within a set. A total of 150 players make up this portion of the release.
Paper parallels for both base cards and Prospects come in the following: Silver, Purple, Blue, Gold, hobby-only Orange (/25), Red (/5) and Metallic Border (1/1). All except Silver are serial numbered. Traditionally, retail packs have some parallels of their own.
On top of these, the 150 Prospects have Chrome versions that are virtually identical save for the slightly more up-scale card stock. Once again, Chrome Prospects have lots of Refractor parallels. In addition to basic Refractors, the following colored versions all come serial numbered: Purple, Blue, Gold, Orange (/25), Red (/5), Printing Plates and Superfractors (1/1).
Added to 2016 Bowman Baseball are Green, Blue and Red Shimmer Variation Refractors. Going by initial sales material, these could be replacing the Ice parallels that have been used in recent years.
Autographs
Chrome Prospect Autographs are, for many, the key part of any main Bowman release. Although autographs combine to land one per hobby box, collectors can expect the majority to fall under this category.
2016 Bowman Baseball Chrome Prospect Autographs come with the following numbered parallels, all of which are exclusive to hobby and jumbo packs: Refractors, Purple Refractors, Blue Refractors, Gold Refractors, Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Printing Plates, and Superfractors (1/1). Shimmer Refractors can also be found.
Prospects aren’t the only ones with base-style autographs. Chrome Rookie Autographs have signatures from players who have already made the jump to the big leagues. These have the same Refractor parallels as the Chrome Prospect Autographs minus the Shimmer and Purple Refractors.
Chrome Prospect and Chrome Rookie Autographs are all signed on-card.
International Ink is a new insert that highlights signatures from players from around the world who signed in July, 2015.
Turn Two Autographs are also new. These are double-sided cards that are signed by two different players. The Chrome-style cards have Gold and SuperFractor parallels. There’s also basic Turn Two cards that don’t have autographs and are only found in hobby packs.
Other signed cards in 2016 Bowman Baseball include All-America Game Autographs and Ultimate Autograph book card, which has signatures from 24 players.
Inserts
Over the years, Bowman has become a product with some of the most content of the year. Besides the many base and Prospect cards as well as their many parallels, there are also a number of regular insert sets as well. 2016 Bowman Baseball is no different.
Bowman Scouts’ Top 100 returns, counting down what the card maker views as the best prospects entering the season. These have Gold, Orange (/25) and Superfractor parallels as well as a limited number of signed cards.
Rookie Recollections jumps back 25 years to the days of 1991 Bowman Baseball and the strong rookie crop that included Chipper Jones and Jeff Bagwell. These retro-theme cards have Gold, Orange (/25), Red and Superfractor (1/1) parallels. Autographed versions are also randomly inserted.
Sophomore Standouts looks at the best second-year players like Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa who had their rookie cards last year. Blue, Orange (/25), Red (/5), Metallic (1/1) and numbered autograph parallels can also be found.
Family Tree is a new insert highlighting fathers and sons who have played professional baseball.

Packs per box: 24

Boxes per case: 12
Set size: Base Set – TBA, Prospects – 150 cards
