Back in the later 70s and into early 80s, there were next to no shows and besides that, few non collectors ever had a thought that cards had value.

So how did dealers and flippers buy cards then?

They would place an ad in a local paper a few days prior saying they are looking to buy baseball cards and for sellers to come to (for example) the holiday inn atblah blah street room 10 on such and such a date.

Remember back then, the thought that ANYONE wanted to buy your old cards was comical.

That's how primitive this hobby was.

That's how Alan Mr. Mint Rosen scored most of his legendary finds back then. There are some great stories in his book.

Dr. James Beckett used to place ads and meet people in hotel rooms too.

As a kid, I would photocopy ads that I made and put them at the laundry room cork board. I even remember meeting a man at Jack in the Box to do a deal at 13 years old (my parents were sitting a few tables over.) So many great memories. :)
