SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A fiber optics line was cut early Thursday in San Jose, knocking out Verizon land line and cell phone service to thousands in southern Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, local officials said.

Chris Darnell, a dispatcher with Santa Clara County, said the fiber optics line was knocked out about 2 a.m. and was actually owned by AT&T but carried Verizon service. AT&T service, apparently, was not impacted.

“It was a fiber optic line cut that is actually owned by AT&T in southern San Jose,” Darnell said. “That somehow is affecting Verizon service… They have not said the cause of that line cut… We really haven’t heard much from Verizon.”

An AT&T repair crew tracked the outage to a site near Monterey Road and Bernal in south San Jose where they found cut optic lines. A repair operation was underway.

Darnell said the major impact of the outage was loss of 911 emergency call service to the area. The Santa Clara dispatch center had not been affected and was trying to help out as much as it can, Darnell said.

“If you have an emergency, try your phone first,” he said. “If you get a fast busy or message that your network is not available, your phone is out. If you need help, you are going to have to get someone who can drive and get to the nearest 24/7 fire or police station or hospital.”

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department dispatched additional officers to the area while police in Morgan Hill visited local business in person to make sure all was well.

“I’m just making sure local businesses are aware the telephone services are not working,” said Morgan Hill police officer Rick Cevantes as he made his rounds. “We want to make sure they (the business owners) know myself and other emergency responders are available for them.”

Kersten Hoffman, of the Office of Emergency Services, said there was not estimate as to when service would be restored.

“We don’t know how long the outage will last,” she said. “Morgan Hill, St. Martin and Gilroy have been affected as well as area of Santa Cruz County…It is affecting 911 service.”
