What's up with McCann? I'm hearing he has some sort of vision problem in his left eye but it hasn't been diagnosed yet. Anyone know of an update? Big McCann fan and don't want to see anything happen to him.

They were talking about it on the broadcast; he has a contact in it to help him see but they said it has not helped much. During his first AB he kept rubbing the area around his eye and called time twice. I hope it's nothing serious.

Ugh. On top of it, he's been hit twice tonight.

The first one he kinda leaned into, and didn't really flinch and the second grazed his jersey, so that is kinda a non-issue :)

Haha there's the benefit to actually watching the game as opposed to tracking it on gamecenter.

Dan O'Brien at the AJC: Just finished talking to McCann about his eye problem. He’s concerned, hopes that the antibiotic drops he got today will clear up the dryness he’s had in his left eye since the opening series at Philly. If not, he’ll have to consider other options, possibly more Lasik surgery as a last resort. They just don’t know right now what’s causing it, whether his eyes have changed since he had Lasik two years ago or if he has an infection or something else causing the dryness. But it’s only in his left eye.

hopefully it clears up quick

Mark Bowman: After returning from Philadelphia last week, McCann visited an eye doctor who told him that there's a chance that his vision has changed since he underwent Lasik surgery in Nov. 2007. But while wearing a contact over the last week, the 25-year-old catcher didn't experience improved vision.

Essentially, McCann's left eye has been dry and he hasn't benefitted from the use of eye drops. On Saturday morning, he began using a prescribed ointment.

cautiously optomistic, we will see (no pun intended)

McCann back in Braves lineup after visit to specialist
By CARROLL ROGERS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Washington — Brian McCann was fitted with a new contact for his left eye when he visited an eye specialist in Washington Tuesday morning, and he was back in the Braves lineup for Tuesday night.

McCann has been suffering from blurry vision in his left eye since Opening Day and was facing the proposition that he might have to have additional Lasik surgery to correct it. But with this contact, he thinks he can get through the season and put off corrective surgery, if necessary, until the offseason.

“My eye changed a little bit,” McCann said. “It’s a little bit more nearsighted now than I was when I got the Lasik done. Now I think this might be a temporary thing until the offseason and maybe re-enhance it. Now it’s just a matter of getting used to this contact.”

McCann hasn’t worn contacts since he had Lasik surgery the winter before the 2008 season. He said it’s just a matter of getting comfortable in one again.

He had already tried a contact to combat this problem but felt it move every time he blinked. This one fits his eye better and doesn’t move around, he said. He said his vision improved right away with it Tuesday morning.

“All it’ll be is a couple days to get used to this thing and it might not even be that long,” McCann said. “I’m seeing good, and I’m in there tonight.”

Mostly on Tuesday he felt relief.

“It’s a big relief, you know why you’ve been blurry the past couple weeks,” McCann said. “Now I just have to move on.”

McCann said he had no regrets over having surgery.

“I think this kind of thing happens,” McCann said. “It’s not a lot but it’s enough to notice when you’re on a baseball field and you need perfect vision. If I didn’t play baseball, I don’t think I would have gone and got it corrected.”

McCann said he’s had poor eyesight since the eighth grade.

“Lasik surgery is the best thing I ever did,” he said. “Last year, I saw as good as you can possibly see. We’ll get back to that and hopefully the contact will work out and we can move on.”

Thanks for that post man. I was really worried about this. Couldn't find anything new on it, and I was frustrated since this was an early morning appointment.

I am not understanding why he doesn't just go get LASIK now, unless he just had his original correction done within a year. I just had LASIK and I was in the gym and running the next day without incident. Why wait?

dunno, but two reasons I could suppose: (1) during the Pirates series they said he'd be out two weeks if he needed it and they don't want him out that long, I'm guessing the longer timeframe is related to the more demanding nature of baseball versus everyday activity on the eyes; (2) if this fixes it, probably better to wait anyway, because it may continue to change

Mine was corrected to 20/20 in both eyes within the first day. Your vision can continue to get better over the course of 6 months. At my one month check up, it was 20/10. That'd be just fine for baseball. I am not understanding why he just doesn't zap his eyes and why he'd be out 2 weeks for it????
