Do you know of any hitters that SURGED in their hitting ability that isn't suspected of Steroids?

LIke they use to hit like 10-20HR per year for a few years, then they hit 30-40 per year?

I am thinking George Foster...Didn't he kind of come out of nowhere to hit 52 homers one year? I think he only hit about 20 or so the years before...

I just checked griffeys stats and that is close to what i was looking for...he averaged like 25 for 5 years, and then he averaged about 45 for the next 6 years...

any others?

I am mainly just curious if some of these "proposed prospects with potential", will some day "surge"...for the most part it seems like you either got it, or you don't....
If you don't got it after 2 full seasons, you likely never will...

Yeah, in 1977 he hit 52 and 1978 he hit 40, but never hit over 30 any other year. From looking at the roster from those years, I would guess they moved him up in the lineup to hit in front of Bench. The same way Maris was moved in front of Mantle in 1961.

On that note, Maris hit 61 in 1961, 39 in 1960 and 33 in 1962, but no year above 28 besides those.

Luis Gonzalez? Not sure, but that was the first name that came to mind.
But he is suspected of 'Roids.

In 1985, Kirby Puckett hit 4 HRs in 691 ABs, IN 1986 he hit 31 HRs in 680 ABs

if im not mistaken chipper would be a good one. 23, 30, 21, and 34 hr's. then a monster year of 45. he was close with 36 and 38 after that, but then tapered of and has been consistent at around 25-29 since.

Ben Ogilvie: http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... be01.shtml

In years of 100+ games: 9, 15, 21, 18, 29, 41, 14 (1981 strike season), 34, 13, 12, 10, 5. He led the league with 41 in 1980 (along with Reggie Jackson).

From 1987 to 1995, Ellis Burks averaged 112 games and 15 HRs per year (51 of 1013 games at Coors Field).

From 1996 to 2002, he averaged 131 games and 29 HRs per year (195 of 921 games at Coors Field).

Every hitter of the last 10-15 years has steroids hanging over him. I also thought of Boggs' 1-year surge, but IIRC, that year there was a widespread increase in homers, leading people to believe the ball had been juiced. And going back, Felix Mantilla's sublime 1964 season was a real fluke.
