so i bought a viciedo contenders auto because he was very hyped, the card had previously sold for about $200, and the card was also hyped up. when i bought it, it had come back down to $130, so i thought it was a nice price.

later when they were selling at about 100, i had it graded for $12 just to see if it could get a 9.5. it came back a 9 and i was trying to sell for about $100 still although they were a little less, about $85.

i was going to hold, until the chrome auto was announced. i was forced to sell, and did tonight.... for $71 :(

so i lost 71 total there, plus ebay fees. learned the hard way to not buy into the hype of a card. most i've ever lost on a card. (well, most i've ever lost on a card i thought was a good buy. bought a super of a PC guy for more than i care to say lol)

end rant. not doing that again

Main reason I stopped prospecting years ago. Learned my lesson from Jerome walton, Gregg Jefferies, and Dwight Smith.

The two most important things in prospecting are:
1. Know when to buy
2. Know when to sell

It's more important to know when to buy than when to sell, but they are an easy 1a. and 1b.

You could have held on to it until he got "hot" again. If you are going to "prospect", you have to be patient. Why sell it now when it's at it's lowest?

i wasn't necessarily prospecting, i was buying a card because I wanted the sox prospect. now i don't want it, and if i wanted a card of his, it'd be his chrome. these cards will not go up a ton again (imo) due to his chrome coming out

Well that blows a lot of people here's theory about unlicensed pre-rookie cards out of the water. If this was the case, then the 2007 Donruss Elite Wieters autos will not sell well after his ML cards are released this season... I guess we will see.

I tend to think it would have gone back up and you sold too early. The chrome release will not be his first auto card. That alone should make it a little in favor of the donruss even though its not MLb lisenced

ya know, there was a song written about prospecting

it goes like this.

On a warm summers evenin on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin out the window at the darkness
til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, son, Ive made a life out of readin peoples faces,
And knowin what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you dont mind my sayin, I can see youre out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey Ill give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if youre gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.

Truer words as they relate to the world of baseball card prospecting have never been spoken.

Probably very very little. You don't play a hand when the deck is stacked against you.

Basic rules of prospecting-

BUY a guy when NOT everyone + their mancrush is talking about

SELL when everyone + their mancrush is talking about it

Know when to hold em, know when to fold em

it was time to cut the loss, imo. he's got a chrome coming out, and although the contenders says 2008, it really was only released a few months before chrome, but both are the same calendar year, right?

hope he does get better at the plate, being a big sox fan :D

That isn't the case here.
