It's hard to invest a lot into pitchers these days. It seems like elbow problems are on the rise.

Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann was expected to throw a bullpen session this afternoon, but that was scratched because he's not completely healthy.

"He had a setback today," interim GM Mike Rizzo said. "A little discomfort in his elbow and we'll take pictures to see what's up. We've been and will continue to be with all of our young starters, specifically with Jordan, we'll be ultraconservative."

"Jordan came in and he feels a little something there and we're concerned to even let him throw the bullpen," interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "He wants to throw, he wants to pitch, but with where were at, we're not going to let him throw. We're going to have him get looked at again and hopefully he will be pitching again, soon."

He had an MRI today, but the team doesn't have the results yet. Riggleman still feels that Zimmermann will get to 150, 160 innings, but they team wants to make sure he's a 100% before they allow him to pitch.

"If he's not 100%, we're not going to out him put there," said Riggleman. "The thing we don't know is, is this just normal pitching soreness, that Jordan has never experienced and is going through it and alarming him a little bit, if it is just normal pitching soreness, then we'll figure that out. Maybe there is something there that says maybe he shouldn't be pitching."

Outfielder Austin Kearns had successful procedure on his right thumb yesterday and is expected to make a complete recovery.

"They opened him up there a little bit in his thumb area," said Riggleman. "Any invasive surgery is going to take a while to heal. I think Austin will probably be ready within the 15-day period that he's on the DL."

Kearns will go back Monday to have it looked at to make sure it's healing properly.

Another outfielder that's been on the disabled list is Roger Bernadina. Bernadina fractured his right back in April and is still working his way back into shape

"Roger Bernadina is scheduled to go on a rehab assignment, which has yet to be determined, but as of now, he just taking batting practice and working out in Florida," Riggleman said.
