In the mail tonight was this 1947 American Legion Baseball Handbook. Pictured inside is Zim's 1946 team that came in 4th in the national tournament. He's pictured with his brother Bill and best friend Jim Frey (both Zim and Frey would manage the Cubs). Book is printed on heavy newsprint, so I doubt many of these survived.
Then tonight I won this 1954 St. Paul Saints team signed ball. This was Zimmer's last stop before the majors (he made his debut that fall). It's on an official American Association (triple A level) ball, so a cool piece of history as that minor league no longer exists. Zimmer's early sig is the bottom one of second picture.
I like items from "before they were stars" especially the American Legion book, which has to be one of his earliest baseball photos.
