With one month remaining before the scheduled release of 2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition, Panini America has released the checklist for the product that integrates draft picks, top prospects and - for the first time - baseball legends in the product.

The legends are shown in high school or college shots, some of them rarely seen before. For instance, George Brett can be seen crossing the plate in an El Segundo (Calif.) High School game, Mike Schmidt at Ohio University, Al Kaline is shown at Southern High School in Baltimore, Nolan Ryan is depicted in his delivery in a staged photo at Alvin High School and Mark Fidrych is pictured while at Worcester Academy.

Several other legends appear in Back to the Future Signatures, Elite Series Autographs and Private Signings.

"We wanted to mix a little of the old with the new without affecting the base EEE checklist, which just includes current prospects," said EEE Brand Manager Mike Payne. "Elite Extra Edition is so much about high school and college baseball prospects... we just thought it would be fun to show some names from the past as they appeared at that period in their lives. Some of the older shots are better than others, but all of them capture a moment in time and provide a glimpse of the player before he made it big and, in many cases, before anyone outside his school had ever heard of him."

One current big leaguer is also shown as a high school player: Albert Pujols, then a junior shortstop at Fort Osage High School in Independence, Mo.

Pujols hand-signed 20 copies of his Elite Series card, and reportedly was amused at seeing the nearly 12-year-old image of himself decked out in his Fort Osage Indians jersey.

Highlights of the 150-card base set include:

Cards of the first 18 players in the Autographed Rookies subset (card #'s 51-68) were sent out for on-card autographs - a first for EEE. Their parallel cards will be sticker autographs. "The intent was to make those players' on-card Autographed Rookies as valuable as possible," Payne said. "To do that, and keep enough autographs in the program, we opted to use stickers for the Turn of the Century parallels and for any inserts they may appear on."
The first certified autographs of Aroldis Chapman - The 22-year-old lefthander and Cuban defector had not signed with a major league club at the time of the printing of EEE, so he is pictured in his Holguin uniform whom he played for in the Cuban National Series last year.
Some 42 first-round or supplemental first-round picks have autographs in the set
Other highlights of the product:

Pete Rose autographs and memorabilia cards
Elite Series autographs, Back to the Future Signatures and Private Signings - autographed sweet spot baseball swatch material - make their debuts
Throwback Threads - with, among others, an LSU Jared Mitchell jersey, a Brownwood (Texas) HS Shelby Miller jersey, a Mike Minor Braves jersey worn during the 2009 Arizona Fall League, an Arizona State Jason Kipnis jersey and a Millville (N.J.) HS jersey worn by Mike Trout

Yes, there will be Hot Boxes

Elite Extra Edition is scheduled to release January 20.

I wonder how Panini pulled that off. Topps owns exclusive WBC rights, and he has yet to sign with a team.

The big question is now...what will be the print run on the autos...how many chapmans will be in there as opposed to a scrub guy.

I know this comment is uncharacteristic of me, but I'd call this a kickass product.

Looking at Pujols as a Junior in HIGH SCHOOL totally makes me believe that he's now in his late 30's.

Seriously, does this guy look like a junior in your highschool?

In years past, cards 1-50 have had a base version and base parallels as well as a TOTC auto and parallels....are we thinking this is the same for this year?
