Let's have a tourney! 5 Slots Left. Win a Goodwin Mini Set!

Quite awhile ago, I was fooling around with Microsoft Excel, and wound up devising a unique fantasy baseball game. Basically, I formed a database of the top 5 career strikeout leaders and top hit leaders at each position for each of the 30 major league clubs. I also went on to include the all-time winningest managers, top single season attendence per game ballparks, and the all-time winning percentage for each club as well.

After the database was formed, a simple formula would generate a new and completely random fantasy team at the push of a button (F9). For those statheads out there, the number of unique teams works out to...wait for it...573,956,280,000,000,000,000,000! How? 15 Categories with 30 possible outcomes each, plus 1 category with 40 possible outcomes.

Ultimately, this gave me an idea to have a tournament where 3 teams would go head to head to head for each round until a winner is crowned (4 rounds in total).

To play this game, we'll need 30 folks to sign up. The remaining 6 slots will be reserved for the "house" (aka: Me).

Here's a sample of 3 teams that could face off in a round:


BASIC SCORING:
1. Each line/position on a team competes directly with the same line/position on the opposing teams

2. The raw totals are compared. The highest total earns 5 points, the 2nd highest total earns 3 points, and the 3rd highest total earns 1 point. If there is a tie, then the same number of points will be awarded to both/all teams. Example: a 2 way tie for first would each earn 5 points, while the remaining team would earn 3 points.

3. Repeat for all 16 lines and add up the total for your team

4. Refer to the bonus table for additional points, if applicable

5. Any "combos" refer to 2 or more entries from the same franchise

6. Add any bonus points to the basic points earned

7. The highest overall total from that group advances to the next round

The winner of this tournament will win the entire 192 set of Goodwin Gypsy Queen minis I had offered before in the HOF prediction contest (no winners).

Okay, here's how the sample in the initial thread would be scored:





Again, for any given line, 5 marks are awarded for 1st place, 3 marks for 2nd place, and 1 mark for last place. Add any applicable bonus points according to the table, and that's your final score. In this example, Team 2 wins the round 100-84-62.

Here's how the tournament would be set up:


1. Round 1 and the Quarterfinals will have only one matchup each (single elimination)
2. The Semifinals will have 2 matchups each. The highest combined score will advance to the Finals.
3. The Finals will have 3 matchups. The highest combined score will be the winner.

We can start this as soon as we fill the remaining slots.

I am also looking for volunteers who might be interested in scoring a few rounds that they are not involved in. This is very straightforward (simple addition), so let me know if you'd be interested.

Important Final Note: All teams/rounds will be 100% randomly generated, so don't worry about me pre-screening any results. For each round, I will open the Excel file. Whichever 3 teams come up will be the first matchup. I will then press F9 3 times before selecting the next matchup.

I realize this is a an unusual format to host on a message board, so it's very important for me to assure everyone that this entire game will be run on the straight and narrow. I will be teams 31-36. This means that there is an 83.33% chance that someone will be taking home the Gypsy Queen mini set!

***By the way, the starting pitchers directly correlate with their all-time rank in strikeouts for their respective franchise. For example, Nolan Ryan's the 4th starter for Team 3. This means that he has the 4th highest strikeout total in Texas Rangers history. The hitters are obviously more straightforward. Any hitter listed means that he is the all-time hit leader at that postion in his franchise's history.

Who says you can't learn a little baseball history while playing?
