From MLB Trade Rumors:

3:05pm: WCCO TV's Mark Rosen reports that Mauer and the Twins reached a preliminary agreement on a 10-year extension. Such a contract would take him through the 2020 season, at which point he'd be 37.

10:32am: Joe Mauer may soon sign a contract extension with the Twins, believes Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Two Christensen sources take the good vibes even further, suggesting the number of years and guaranteed money is already agreed upon. Christensen's take on a Mauer extension: "It's a matter of when, not if."

If Mauer is locked up, Victor Martinez will jump to the top of the projected free agent catcher class for the 2010-11 offseason.

Am told by source close to the Twins that the report of a preliminary 10-year agreement with Mauer is not accurate.

Buster_ESPN

The Twins remain optimistic that a deal will eventually get done, but a deal is not done yet.

Multiple sources now saying that the report on a preliminary agreement for Mauer is not accurate.

HA! But you know he's staying there until SOMETHING is confirmed...cause you know the Twins are going to do whatever they can to lock up Mauer, and lock him up for a few years.

Does anyone in their right mind really believe that Ramos is in the Twins plans for behind the plate? Their catcher of the future is their catcher of the present.

In any event, I'll be thrilled for the Twins and their fans if and when Mauer signs an extension. It's great to see homegrown players (and hometown players to boot) re-up with their team. I'm tired of fans of big market teams pencilling guys into their lineup once they hit the open market.

What would happen to Ramos?

He is a DAMN good player. Not Mauer caliber, but damn good.

He will either be a DH in Minn, spelling Mauer every now and then or will be part of a big trade with another team. The guy is too good not to get a shot somewhere. Just hope its with minn.

Good news for Twins fans
Thats if the Twins keep him,
The only thing that does is keep him there if the Twins want him..
If they ever struggle for $$, He may be shipped off somewhere in the northeast!

Maybe...but you have to keep in mind two things.

1. You know that any deal is going to have some type of no-trade/limited-trade clause.

2. He's only four years away from being a 10/5 guy. So they'd have to trade him before that time.

with mauers knee history having Ramos is a great thing for the organization. He can spell Mauer and maybe play some DH. I m not real sure what they'll do but depth is a great thing.

The Twins have Kubel and Thome for the DH slot in '10.

But C prospects generally take a long time to develop and by the time Ramos gets his offense and defense up to MLB ***** Mauer will likely be needing time at 1B or DH himself. With Mauer's knees...a 10 year contract may be an eternity. I would still sign him- you have to with the new stadium, but let's hope he stays healthy for the franchise' sake.
