I was looking at his stats and wondered what led to his huge increase in home runs?
In 1984 he hit 0 hrs in 557 Abs
In 1985 he hit 4 hrs in 691 Abs
Then in 1986 he hit 31 hrs in 680 Abs

Was the pitching horrible that year or was he just lucky.Can anyone explain this huge jump in hrs?

Change in bat size. He was really able to get his bat speed after getting rid of that.

That's really not uncommon. New batting coach, change in hitting style, maturation as a player...the list goes on and on. Maybe he did change the size of his bat? Of the game used Frank Thomas bats I own, it always amazes me how light his bats got after a couple of years. The 31.5 ouncers especially...while I'm a sizeable man, I'm nothing as tall as Big Frank, and I can swing a 31.5oz and 32oz bat like a hot knife through butter. Anything heavier though, and I lose the majority of my bat speed.

It is pretty uncommon.There probably arent many if any players to ever see such a drastic change in hr numbers between a 2 year period.But I do see what your saying with the bat,coach,maturation.

Ball was suspected of being juiced in the mid 80s

Examples:

Wade Boggs
86 = 8
87 = 24
88 = 5

Gwynn
85 = 6
86 = 14
87 = 7

Mattingly
84 = 23
85 = 35
86 = 31
87 = 30
88 = 18

Ozzie Smith
84 = 1
85 = 6
86 = 0

Look at almost any player during this time period and you will see a spike in HR's

Maybe his team needed more power that year? It is said that Ichiro could bang out 30-40 HRs a year if needed, he just chooses to help the club in other and better ways.
