I don't understand dropping big $$ on a guy whose eyes look left and right when he is apparently looking at a camera... I mean, when my parents told me to look both ways before I crossed the street, I had to use my neck to turn my head and physically "look both ways," Santana can do that while staring down oncoming traffic. (I guess)
Maybe scouts think this helps? They must assume that he can see the fastball well out front with his left eye while on the other hand catch the breaking ball/change out of his right eye that is looking behind him just in time to slap it out of the catcher's mitt? Check out his MiLB.com pic if you don't know what I'm talking about.
